LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Vikings dropped their final game at the 2016 DeMarini Desert Classic falling to UNLV 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium in Las, Vegas, Nev.

"It was a rough end to a rough weekend," third-year
Barb Sherwood said following the loss to UNLV. "We will get back at it tomorrow."

The Vikings scattered four hits though seven innings but were held scoreless for the fifth time this season. Junior designated player
Shae Nelson accounted for two hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Â

After a scoreless first inning, UNLV plated a run in the bottom of the second off Portland State starting pitcher
Karyn Wright. The Rebels loaded the bases with one out before Wright got the second out with a strike out.

UNLV plated its run on an infield single with the bases loaded to go up 1-0. The next batter flew out to
Lexi Goranson in straight away center field for the third out.

After going in order in the top of the third, all groundouts, Portland State brought
Meagan Hendrix in to pitch for Wright to start the bottom of the third inning.

After getting the leadoff batter to fly out to center field, the next batter doubled to center.
Brianna Celaya came in and made a terrific sliding catch in left field for the second out of the inning. After the runner on second stole third, a single to right plated the second run of the game to put the Rebels up 2-0. The next batter flied out to right for the final out of the inning.

The Vikings had their best chance to plate a couple of runs after
Shae Nelson and
Alex Flores put together back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the fourth. The next batter popped out to the catcher for the second out. The Vikings could not get their first two-out hit of the game as the next batter grounded out to third for the final out.

UNLV added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The leadoff batter reached on a fielding error by the Vikings' third baseman. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners and two outs, the runner on first attempted to steal second and got caught in a rundown. Before the Vikings could tag the runner for the third out, the runner at third crossed the plate to put the Rebels up 3-0.

After going in order in the top of the fifth, the Vikings again changed pitchers, bringing in
Kristen Crawford. UNLV plated a pair of unearned runs off Crawford on an unsuccessful rundown at home plate and a sacrifice fly to left field to go up 5-0 after five complete.

Two more runs by the Rebels in the bottom of the sixth put them up 7-0. The Vikings went 1-2-3 in the seventh to drop their final game at the Desert Classic.

Portland State heads to the Aloha state next week for the Hawaii Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The Vikings will take on Utah Valley for three games and Hawaii for two.
