TEMPE, Ariz.
– Portland State fell to Stanford by a score of 11-0 in five innings in both team's season opener Friday night at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

"I saw some good things tonight," third-year Head Coach Barb Sherwood said following the game. "The defense played well, we hit some shots that were caught, and the team fought the whole time. I am proud of them."

The Vikings fell behind early after allowing five runs in the top of the first inning. After striking out the first batter of the game, senior RHP Kristen Crawford got into a bit of trouble. The next two batters singled before a walk loaded the bases.

A walk drove in the first run of the game for the Cardinal. The next batter hit a bases-clearing triple to put Stanford up 4-0. An infield single scored the runner from third and the Cardinal led 5-0 heading to the bottom of the first.

Stanford added a pair of runs in the top of the second off of Crawford to go up 7-0. Junior LHP Meagan Hendrix came on in relief of Crawford to start the third inning. Hendrix gave up three runs on a pair of long balls in the third to make it a 10-0 game in favor of the Cardinal.

Junior DP Shae Nelson reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the third to give the Vikings' their first base runner of the game. Senior LF Brianna Celaya moved Nelson to second on a single to left field for her first hit of the season. The next batter struck out as the score remained 10-0.

After a walk to the leadoff batter in the top of the fourth, Hendrix struck out the next three batters to hold the Cardinal scoreless in an inning for the first time in the game.

Senior SS Ashley Smith and junior C Alex Flores each singled in the bottom of the fourth, but the Vikings could not push a run across.

Another home run off Hendrix in the top of the fifth gave Stanford an 11-0 lead. The Vikings went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Cardinal its first win of the season.

Crawford gave up seven earned over two innings and picked up the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. Stanford's Haley Snyder picked up the win with a complete game shutout.

Portland State is back at it tomorrow for a pair of games at the Kajikawa Classic. The Vikings take on the Wisconsin Badgers at 4:30 p.m. MT before facing the Utah Utes at 9:30 p.m.
