San Francisco, CA - It was the Calaen and Traylin show in the second half as the Portland State Vikings came from 13 points down to defeat the University of San Francisco, 82-78, at the Sobrato Center.
Robinson and Farris combined for 28 of PSU's 45 second-half points and the Vikings picked up their second road win and fifth overall win of the season. PSU trailed 54-41 with 16:45 to go, but went on a 15-2 run to over the next four minutes to tie the game and make it close down the stretch.
Robinson finished with a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the second half. He made 7-11 from the field, hitting five of seven three-point field goals. Farris, who sat almost the entire first half with foul trouble, scored 15 of his 17 points after intermission, and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Portland State improved to 5-4 on the season, while San Francisco suffered its first home loss and went to 7-2.
San Francisco led 47-37 at halftime, shooting 17-33 from the field (.515) and 7-8 at the line (.875). The Vikings' De'Sean Parsons led all scorers at that point with 11.
PSU's defense buckled down after intermission, holding the Dons to just 40% shooting. But trailing by 54-41, the Vikings went on a 10-0 run to close the margin to 54-51. Robinson made a layup and a pair of three-pointers in the rally. A conventional three-point play by Farris finally tied the game at 56-56 with 12:36 to play.
Portland State took its first lead at 67-66 on a three-pointer by Robinson with 8:38 left. The lead changed hands six times after that.
PSU was trailing by one with 36.7 seconds left when Robinson was fouled and made a pair of free throws. That gave the Vikings the lead back at 79-78. They then forced a missed three-pointer that was rebounded by USF's Matt McCarthy with 4.5 seconds left. He was fouled but missed both free throws. Farris then rebounded and was fouled. The junior center made the second of two shots and PSU led 80-78 with 3.2 seconds left.
USF turned the ball over on the in-bound and Robinson tacked on a layin for the final score.
In addition to PSU's improved defense, the Vikings out-rebounded the Dons 20-15 in the second half. They also got some help as USF made only 1-6 free throws in the last four minutes of the game.
Joining Robinson and Farris in double figures for the Vikings were Parsons with 14 points and Deontae North with 11.
After entering the game shooting .509 as a team, PSU made only 27-62 shots (.435), but were solid at the free throw line, hitting 22-26 (.846).
San Francisco finished the game at .466 from the field and .650 at the line. Chase Foster led the Dons with 16 points, while Nate Renfro had a game-high nine rebounds.
GAME NOTES: PSU leading scorer Braxton Tucker did not play for the fourth straight game… the Vikings have won four of their last five games, with two of them on the road at West Coast Conference schools (Pepperdine, San Francisco)… this was the sixth road game in nine outings for the Vikings… Portland State will play at the University of Portland on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game.
