PORTLAND – The Vikings took full advantage of their height and picked up their first win of the season, 93-61, over Pacific Union (Calif.) Sunday afternoon at the Peter W. Stott Center.

Portland State (1-2 overall) came into the game with a definite height advantage over Pacific Union, which led to season highs in rebounding and points in the paint.

The Vikings pulled down a season-high 65 rebounds in the game, including 23 offensive boards. The 65 rebounds were six shy of the Portland State record of 71 set against Pacific (Ore.) on Nov. 29, 1993.

Portland State had been outrebounded in both previous games this season but outrebounded Pacific Union by 35. Senior G
Ashley Torres Negron recorded a team-high 11 rebounds, seven coming in the fourth quarter. It was the first double-digit rebound performance by a Viking this season.

Torres Negron was the only Viking with double-digit rebounds but Portland State had seven players with at least five rebounds in the game.

Offensively, the Vikings scored a season-high 93 points and had four players in double-figures. They scored a season-high 66 points in the paint and added 17 second-chance points.

Sidney Rielly led the Vikings in scoring for the third-straight game to start the season. She posted her second-straight 20-point game with a game-high 24 points. She went 11-for-18 from the floor. Here 11 field goals are the most by a Viking this season and the most since the 2013-14 season.

Courtney West scored 16 points (8-for-15 FG) and pulled down eight rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Sophomore F
Pia Jurhar added 12 points (6-for-8 FG) and nine rebounds in 18 minutes.

Elle Pace came off the bench and scored 10 points (5-for-6) with five rebounds in the fourth quarter.

Ashley Bolston tallied four points in the game but played the role of the distributor for the Vikings. She tallied a PSU individual season-high nine assists in the game, while pulling down five rebounds.

Portland State jumped out to a huge 19-2 lead to start the game by holding Pacific Union without a field goal for the first 6:46 of the game. The Pioneers cut into the Vikings' lead and trailed 28-17 after a buzzer beater from half court to end the first quarter.

The Vikings extended their lead in the second quarter and led 45-32 at the break. Rielly and Jurhar led the team with 13 and 12 points respectively in the first half.

After allowing Pacific Union to hang around in the second quarter, Portland State blew the game open in the third quarter. The Vikings outscored the Pioneers 25-13 in the quarter, going 9-for-10 from the floor to start the half. They shot .632 in the third and scored 20 of their 25 points in the paint.

Torres Negron opened the fourth quarter with the Vikings' first three-pointer of the game. She hit three in the final 10 minutes for her nine points in the game. Pace added 10 points as Portland State extended its lead to win by the final 93-61 margin.

The 93 points scored by the Vikings are the most since they won 97-73 over Sacramento State on Feb. 3, 2011.

Pacific Union's Natalya Stepanchuk led the team with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the game. She went 6-for-21 from the floor with five three-pointers.

Portland State hits the road again this week and will take on the Seattle Redhawks on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. PT. Â
