Vikings Drop Double Overtime Heartbreaker At Fullerton, 106-100

Fullerton, CA - Tre Coggins shot Cal State Fullerton back into the game in the closing moments of regulation, then delivered a key three-pointer in the second overtime as the Titans beat Portland State, 106-100. 

Coggins scored a game-high 31 points, including hitting eight three-pointers. He nailed a pair of threes in the final minute of regulation, two in the first overtime and another in the second overtime. His three in the second overtime came with 1:01 on the clock and gave the Titans a 101-98 lead they would not relinquish.

Portland State had its chance to close out the game in regulation. The Vikings led by eight points with 1:12 remaining in the game.

But the Titans made three plays and the Vikings missed three free throws in the final minute. Coggins hit a three-pointer with 45.1 seconds remaining, then was fouled on a three-point attempt with 15.6 seconds left. He made all three free throws to tie the game.

The Vikings got a final driving attempt by Calaen Robinson that bounced off the rim and the game went to overtime.

Coggins hit a three-pointer one minute into the first overtime period to give Fullerton its first lead since 60-59 with more than 10 minutes to play in regulation. Another Coggins three put the Titans ahead 86-82. 

But PSU came back this time. Braxton Tucker made a three-pointer with 1:55 left to put the Vikings ahead 87-86.

A Coggins layin with 20.9 seconds remaining gave Fullerton a 90-87 lead. After a timeout by Portland State, Bryce Canda rolled off a screen hitting a catch-and-shoot three-pointer to tie to the game at 90. The Titans raced to the other end, but were unable to score and the game went to a second overtime.

The game remained close through the first four minutes of the second extra session. Then Coggins made another big play, hitting a three-pointer at the 1:01 mark to give the Titans a 101-98 advantage. From there the Vikings couldn't answer. Fullerton made 5-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

It was a particularly tough defeat for the Vikings, who played so well offensively. PSU made 13-15 shots to open the game, taking a 26-19 lead early. Tucker had 13 points in the opening burst, making 6-7 shots.

Later in the half though, the Vikings went nearly six minutes without scoring, surrendering its lead to the Titans for the first time since the opening moments. Fullerton had a 36-31 lead but a pair of three-pointers by Canda late in the half kept the Vikings close at 43-41 by halftime.

The second half was a battle as it was never more than a two-possession game. Fullerton's largest lead was five points and the Vikings largest lead was three. That is until the Vikings turned a game tied at 70-70 with 4:26 left into an 80-72 lead at the 1:16 mark.

Tucker led the Vikings with a career-high 22 points, hitting 10-19 shots and 2-3 from three-point range. Canda added 17 points, making 5-8 three-pointers, and four assists. Zach Gengler scored 16, De'Sean Parsons had 14, Khari Holloway scored 13 and Robinson scored 11.

PSU shot 37-71 from the field (.521), 11-23 from three-point range (.478) and 15-21 at the line (.714). The Vikings also handed off 21 assists, led by five from Robinson.

In addition to his 31 points, Coggins had eight rebounds. Jackson Rowe added 18 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Allman scored 26 for the Titans.

PSU drops to 0-2 on the season while Fullerton goes to 2-0.

GAME NOTES: This was Portland State's first overtime game in two seasons… Portland State and Cal State Fullerton are tied 5-5 in the all-time series, with each team winning all five games on its home court… Traylin Farris led the Vikings with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.… the Vikings will have their home opener on Thursday night at the Stott Center. PSU hosts George Fox in a 7:05 p.m. game.
