Portland, OR - While a multitude of bricks are coming down outside the Stott Center in the midst of its remodel, there were very few inside on Thursday night as the Portland State Vikings got their home schedule off the right way, beating George Fox, 113-81.
Portland State shot .655 from the field, and the 113 points were the most since Feb. 3, 1978 when a Freeman Williams-led PSU team beat Rocky Mountain, 133-110. Williams scored a PSU-record 81 points in that game.
The majority of the Stott Center is currently being razed to make way for the new Viking Pavilion in 2018. Little remains of the 50-year old brick facility, but the Stott gym remains intact until the conclusion of the basketball season in March.
PSU was led by career-highs of 24 points from Braxton Tucker and 23 points from Calaen Robinson. Tucker made 8-10 from the field and 8-11 at the free throw line. Brandon Hollins came off the bench to score 18 points, while hitting 7-7 from the field.
The Division III Bruins were perfectly content to play at the rapid pace the Vikings desired. And it worked for a few minutes as George Fox stayed close by forcing five Viking turnovers early on. When PSU finally got shots, they went in, and the Bruins couldn't do much about it.
A 19-8 run by the Vikings to close out the first half produced a 51-34 advantage. Hollins scored 10 points off the bench to spark the Vikings as they pulled away.
PSU shot .581 from the field as the Bruins hit only .342 in the half. Robinson had 14 by halftime, with 11 from De'Sean Parson.
An 11-3 run out of halftime had the Vikings up by 25 at 62-37. They cruised to victory from there, shooting .741 from the field in the second half (20-27).
For the game, PSU was 38-58 from the field (.655). Had the Vikings shot a little better from three-point range (7-20, .350) and the free throw line (30-45, .667), they may have threatened the 133 mark. The school scoring record is 142.
Also in double figures was Khari Holloway with 11 points. Bryce Canda and Tucker each grabbed 10 rebounds as the Vikings beat the Bruins on the glass, 42-27. Holloway and Parsons each had four assists.
JJ Lacey led four Bruins players in double figures with 13 points. Dylan Hamlett and Johnathan Doutt each scored 12.
Portland State improved to 1-2 on the season with the win. Through three games, the Vikings are averaging 94.3 points per game and giving up 91.7.
GAME NOTES: Portland State is now 3-0 all-time against George Fox… Portland State is 42-8 in non-conference games at home in the past 10 seasons (2007-2016). The Vikings are 19-0 against lower division schools during that span… the Vikings are off until Nov. 25 when they play at Loyola Marymount.
