HILLSBORO, Ore. — Down 2-0 to Sacramento State, the Portland State women's soccer team got back into the match on a 57th-minute goal from sophomore
Krystal de Ramos, but that's where the scoring ended as the Vikings fell 2-1 to the Hornets Friday at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Vikings (6-11-1, 4-5-1 Big Sky) came into the match with the ability to clinch a spot in the Big Sky tournament with a win, but will instead now have to wait out the results of other matches Friday to determine their fate.
The Vikings did well to get back into the match Friday, however, after Sacramento State went up 2-0 on Andrea Boehm's goal in the 56th minute.
The Hornets came into the match as one of the Big Sky's best defensive teams, making a 2-0 hole seem almost insurmountable, but the Vikings got right back in it as de Ramos scored her goal less than minute later.
Redshirt junior
Kristin Moyer initiated the play that led to de Ramos' goal, as she sent a free kick into the box that first bounced off the head of a Sacramento State defender. Junior
Katie Forsee found the ball from there, and sent a misdirection flick to de Ramos on the right post, who then slotted in a shot from point-blank range.
De Ramos' goal came just 48 seconds after Boehm's goal, the fifth fastest the Vikings have ever responded to an opposing team's goal.
The goal also sparked the Vikings' push for an equalizer, as the Vikings outshot the Hornets 9-3 after the goal.
Ironically, the Vikings' two center backs had two of the best looks at a potential equalizer, with both coming in the same sequence. Moyer had the first look, as she sent a free kick up from more than 35 yards that almost snuck into the near post. Sacramento State goalkeeper Kaylyn Evans got an initial touch on the shot, but then almost knocked the ensuing rebound into the goal as the ball hit her leg after bouncing off the left post.
The ball instead got knocked out for a corner, which was cleared right to the feet of Moyer's fellow center back,
Mary Beth Barnum. Barnum had an open look from 35 yards out after the initial clearance and sent a line drive that squarely struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.
The Vikings also had three shots on goal come in succession between the 78th and 79th minutes from Forsee,
Morgan Matthews and de Ramos, but all either came from distance or went right to Evans in goal.
The Hornets initially took the lead in the match on a 25th-minute goal from leading-scorer Jennier Lum, who got behind the Portland State defense on a long ball up the field. Moyer tracked back to block Lum's initial shot on the play, but the rebound went right to Lum, who sent another shot across the face of the goal that ducked inside the left post.
Boehm then put the Hornets up 2-0 with her goal in the 56th minute, which came on a free kick into the box from Rachel Leonard.
