PORTLAND
– Behind a pair of freshmen outside hitters, the Portland State volleyball team cruised to its first win of the season with a sweep of Nevada Saturday morning at the Peter W. Stott Center. The Vikings won by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-19.

"It feels fantastic to get our first win of the season," ninth-year Head Coach Michael Seemann said following the win. "As much as it is important to grow and to learn, it's equally important for our team to experience winning, for them to get a taste of what it feels like to win."

Freshman OH Eva Linden led the Vikings with 11 kills and hit a team-high .455 in the process connecting on 11 of her 22 attacks with just one error. Linden added five digs and a trio of blocking assists in the winning effort.

Fellow freshman OH Jenna Mullen added 10 kills of her own for her first career double-digit kill performance. Mullen hit .421 (10-2-19) for the match after not playing Wednesday against Portland. Mullen added a trio of service aces including back-to-back aces to close out the third set and secure the team's first win of the year.

Mullen's aces were three of the team's nine aces in the match, its highest total of the season. Over the past two matches, the Vikings have recorded 17 aces in seven sets (2.43 aces per set). Portland State had only six aces in its first three matches of the season.

Mullen gave the Vikings a spark in the first set hitting on five of her first 10 attacks. Junior OH Pati Anae added five kills of her own, along with three digs, to lead the Vikings to a 25-21 win in the opening frame.

Freshman MB Katy Wilson picked up where Mullen and Anae left off in the second going 4-for-7 with no errors in the set. She added three total blocks, including a solo stuff at the net. Anae got hot from the service line with three aces in the set. Portland State hit .378 as a team in the frame and took it 25-14 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Portland State kept its foot down on the gas and hit .462 in the final frame, it's best hitting mark in a set this season. Linden got the hot hand in the third with five kills while Mullen added four kills and a trio of aces to lead the Vikings to a 25-19 win.

The Vikings held the Wolf Pack to a .176 hitting mark, the lowest by an opponent this season. The Vikings also hit a season-high .337 from the floor.

Portland State improved to 1-4 on the season while Nevada dropped to 1-4.

The Vikings will look to keep their momentum rolling and win their second straight match Saturday night when they host Grand Canyon at the Peter W. Stott Center. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

NOTES: Portland State hit a season-high .337 as a team … Portland State recorded a season-high nine service aces … Sophomore S Erin Clark posted her second double-double of the season with 19 assists and 12 digs.
