Ashley Smith came to the plate and drove a shot to deep center field, over the center fielder's head, and off the base of the wall for a two-run triple. Smith's two-RBI triple gave the Vikings the lead at 2-1 through five innings.

The Vikings' lead did not last long as the Hornets plated two runs in the top of the sixth to go up 3-2.

Portland State had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to plate a run to tie the game. The Vikings could got get a rally going in the seventh and fell 3-2.
