Woods' Wins in 100, 200, 4x100m Relay Leads Vikings in Showdown with Hornets at Sacramento State Open

RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Senior Jasmine Woods won the 100 and 200 meters, and ran on the Vikings' winning 4x100-meter relay team as she led a small contingent of Viking sprinters that stood out against their Sacramento State counterparts at the Sacramento State Open Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

Woods swept the 100 and 200 meters while competing head-to-head against some of the other top sprinters in the Big Sky Conference this season. Woods faced Sacramento State's Caprice Powell in the 100 meters, giving Woods a look at Powell, who has led the Big Sky in the 100 meters all season, ahead of the Big Sky meet next weekend. Woods edged Powell at the line to win the 100 meters Saturday, finishing in 11.69 seconds to Powell's 11.71 seconds.

Woods also blew away Sacramento State's Dominique Whittington in the 200 meters, winning in 23.92 seconds to Whittington's 24.19 seconds.

Woods' besting of the Hornet sprinters comes less than a week before the senior likely faces the same athletes at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Woods still ranks second to Powell in both the 100 and 200 meters within the Big Sky, while Whittington also ranks fifth in the Big Sky in the 200.

Additionally, the Vikings and Hornets – first and second in the 4x100-meter relay in the Big Sky, respectively – also went head-to-head in the short relay Saturday, with the Vikings coming out on top once again, finishing in a seasonal-best 45.24 seconds to the Hornets' 45.89 seconds. Woods and relay teammates Jazmin Ratcliff, Genna Settle and Baileh Simms now rank 31st in the NCAA west in the 4x100-meter relay, putting them right on the verge of qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary meet. The top 24 declared relay teams make the meet, putting the Vikings just outside of the qualifying bubble at the moment.

The Vikings also picked up an event win in the 400 meters, as sophomore Whitney Diggs finished in 55.06 seconds, her second-best time of the outdoor season.

Fellow sophomore CeCelia Jackson also set a seasonal best in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 13.62 seconds to lead the Vikings' three-member hurdle crew.

The Vikings will now head to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 13-16, in Cheney, Wash.
