POCATELLO, Idaho – The Portland State softball team dropped its series finale with Idaho State, 9-1 in five innings, Saturday afternoon in Pocatello, Idaho.
The Bengals plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 run. After a scoreless second inning, the Vikings scored their first run of the series in the top of the third.
Melissa Masters doubled to right center to leadoff the inning.
Shae Nelson singled back to the pitcher to put two runners on.
Ashley Smith walked to load the bases with no body out.
After a strikeout,
Brittany Hendrickson grounded out to the second baseman to score Masters from third. PSU was unable to capitalize on their best scoring opportunity of the weekend, as the score remained 3-1 heading to the bottom of the third.
Idaho State scored three more runs in each of the next two innings to go up 9-1. Portland State had a scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth but had a runner thrown out at the plate. The game ended with the Bengals winning 9-1 in five innings.
Nelson went 2-for-2 in the game as the Vikings tallied four hits and a walk in the game.
Idaho State improved to 25-14 overall and 10-2 in Big Sky Conference play while Portland State fell to 10-30 and 3-9.
The Vikings will return home for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader with the Oregon Ducks Tuesday, April 14 starting at 4 p.m. They will then head to North Dakota for a three-game Big Sky series.
