MCMINNVILLE, Ore. — The Portland State track and field teams had five athletes hit Big Sky qualifying marks in the distance events, as they opened their 2015 outdoor season at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker at Maxwell Field this weekend.
Â
Sophomore
Nathan Fleck and junior
T-Roy Brown gave the Viking men two qualifiers in the 800 meters, as they placed first and second in the event in times of 1:52.82 and 1:53.06, respectively. Fleck's winning time shaves a couple of ticks off his personal best of 1:52.85 from last season, which ranked him ninth all-time at Portland State in the 800 meters. Brown, meanwhile, beat his old personal best of 1:55.50 in the event by close to two and a half seconds with his time Saturday.
Â
The Viking women also had three athletes hit Big Sky qualifying marks in the 10,000 meters on Friday night, led by senior
Camelia Mayfield, who placed second in the event in 36:00.94.
Â
The big mark in the 10,000, though, came from sophomore
Maggie Coleman, as she shaved more than a minute off her old personal best in the event with her time of 36:32.11 Friday. Coleman's time moves her up to sixth all-time in the event at Portland State, up from 10th, where she started the season after running 37:34.62 in 2014.
Â
Sophomore
Cheryn Trapp also hit the Big Sky qualifying mark in the 10,000 meters with her time of 37:40.11. Friday's 10,000 meters marked Trapp's outdoor debut at Portland State, as she did not compete during the 2014 outdoor season.
Â
Outside of the Big Sky qualifiers, several of the Vikings' distance runners set new personal bests in their events at the meet. The Vikings ran six athletes in the men's 10,000 meters Friday, and all six set new personal bests in the event. Senior
Andrew Landstrom led the Vikings' six-man crew in the 10,000 with his time of 31:21.25 Friday, moving him up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State. Additionally, junior
John Talik also cracked the all-time top 10 Friday, as he finished in 31:37.23.
Â
Besides Landstrom and Talik, senior
Jake Schwartz shaved over 30 seconds off his old personal best with his time of 31:58.24 in the 10,000. A trio of freshmen then followed Schwartz, as
Jose Macias,
Justin Wikler and
Ethan Cotton made their outdoor PSU debuts with times of 32:37.55, 33:21.96 and 34:42.74, respectively.
Â
Freshman
Gwyneth McMorris also made an impressive debut for the Vikings at the meet, as she placed second and third in the 800 and 1,500 meters, respectively. McMorris placed second in the 800 in 2:20.38, less than a step ahead of Mayfield, who finished third behind McMorris in 2:20.39.
Â
McMorris also edged Mayfield, her senior teammate, while setting a new personal best in the 1,500 meters Saturday. McMorris placed third in the 1,500 in 4:45.85, less than a second ahead of Mayfield, who placed fourth in 4:46.75.
Â
Sophomore
Kennedy Martin also set a new personal best in the 1,500 meters, as she finished eighth in 5:00.89, just under 20 seconds faster than her old best of 5:20.83.
Â
Sophomore
Ben Richardson set a big personal best in the men's 1,500 meters, meanwhile, as he placed second in the event in 4:01.91, more than eight seconds faster than his old best of 4:10.16.
Â
In the field, junior
Sydney Johnson won the discus with a throw of 144-11 (44.18m) Saturday, while freshman
Haley Bell set a new personal best in her Portland State debut in the event. Bell placed fifth behind Johnson with a throw of 121-05 (37.00m), close to six and a half feet better than her prep personal best of 115-0 (35.06m).
Â
The Vikings will now take a week off from competition before returning to their outdoor schedule at the Rose City Preview, which the Vikings will host along with the University of Portland at Mt. Hood Community College's Earl Klapstein Stadium in Gresham, Ore., on March 21.
