Wildcats Take Series Finale in Walk-Off Fashion

OGDEN, Utah
– The Portland dropped the series finale to Weber State Saturday afternoon in Ogden, Utah. The Vikings led late but fell by a final score of 7-6.
 
Portland State got on the board first with four runs in the top of the third inning. Brianna Celaya doubled to left to leadoff the inning. After flying out for the first out of the inning, Shae Nelson singled to center. Celaya moved to third on the play.
 
Ashley Smith drove in Celaya from third on a single to left for the game's first run. Rayleen Pallan loaded the bases after reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman. Brittany Hendrickson took advantage of the error and drove in two more to go up 3-0. Pallan scored on the next play when Nitschelm reached on an error by the shortstop to put the Vikings up 4-0.
 
The Vikings added another run in the top of the fourth inning to go up 5-0 on a Pallan RBI single to left, which scored Melissa Masters from third.
 
Portland State starting pitcher Kristen Crawford threw three shutout innings before giving up a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Crawford got into more trouble in the bottom of the fifth after giving up three straight hits, including two doubles, to start the inning, which plated two runs. Another run came in later in the inning to tie the game at 5-5.
 
Portland State retook the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Hendrickson to go up 6-5. The lead did not last long as Weber State tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
 
After the Vikings went in order in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats won the game 7-6 with a bases loaded walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
 
Karyn Wright, who came on in relief of Crawford, took the loss and fell to 2-6 overall.
 
Weber State improved to 25-11 overall and 6-0 in Big Sky Conference play while Portland State fell to 7-25 and 1-5.
 
NOTES: It was Portland State's first loss when scoring six runs or more this season …  Brittany Hendrickson went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs … Alex Flores went 2-for-4.
