LAKEWOOD, Calif. – The Portland State softball team dropped its final game at the Long Beach-Louisville Slugger Invitational by a score of 6-3 to Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon in Lakewood, Calif.
Â
Both teams remained scoreless through the first four innings before the Titans plated the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. The first batter of the inning led off with a single to right and was moved over to third base on a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt. A bunt single plated the first run to put Fullerton up 1-0.
Â
The Titans added three more runs, one earned, in the top of the sixth off Portland State starting pitcher
Meagan Hendrix. She got the first two batters in the inning before walking four straight batters, three of which would come around to score, to put the Titans up 4-0.
Â
Two more runs in the top of the seventh inning put Fullerton up 6-0.
Â
The Vikings finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough to mount the comeback.
Ashley Smith singled, Aubrey Nitshelm walked, and
Lexi Goranson singled to load the bases.
Â
A pinch-hit walk and a pair of fielder's choices plated the three runs for the Vikings but they were unable to get the big hit with runners in scoring position and fell 6-3.
Â
Goranson went 3-for-3 with three singles and a run scored in the game. Smith racked up two hits and scored another run.
Brittany Hendrickson had her four-game hitting streak broken after going 0-for-3.
Â
Hendrix picked up the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season. She allowed four runs, two earned, over 5 2/3 innings. The Vikings dropped to 5-10 on the season.
Â
Portland State will head to the USF-Under Armour Showcase next week hosted by South Florida in Tampa, Fla. The Vikings will take Wisconsin, South Florida, Mercer, Boston College, and Villanova at the showcase.
