Tygue Howland Named Associate Athletics Director At PSU

Portland State Director of Athletics Mark Rountree has announced the hiring of Tygue Howland as the new Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. Howland replaces Zack Wallace, who left PSU after eight years to take a Development position at Pacific University in Forest Grove.

Howland rejoins the Portland State Athletics staff after a brief stint working in Development for Oregon State University Athletics. From 2011-14 Howland had worked in Viking Athletics, most recently as Assistant Director of Development.

"We are very excited that Tygue Howland has rejoined Portland State Athletics,"said Rountree. "Every donor, alumnus, and stakeholder I have met over the last few weeks has told me that Tygue is a difference maker for PSU. His return will have a tremendous impact on our ability to generate revenue, and connect PSU Athletics to the campus and the community. His passion for this great institution and his strong work ethic are key ingredients to move our department forward."

As PSU's newest Associate AD, Howland is now responsible for all department development, fund-raising, donor relations, sponsorships, marketing, ticketing and external affairs. His staff includes Director of New Business Development Dennis Ferguson and Director of Ticket Operations and Student Marketing Anthony Vu.

In his previous tenure Howland's main focus and responsibility was growing scholarship and donor support for the Viking Athletic Fund. The Viking Athletic Fund is the Annual Giving Program generating scholarship funds for all of PSU Athletics.

Among Howland's special events responsibilities was directing the annual Night of Wine and Roses for Viking Athletics. The 2014 version of the event, his second in direct charge, raised more than $360,000 - the most in the history of the event.

Howland, a former quarterback on the Viking football team, earned his degree from Portland State in 2010. He was a double major in Business Management and Human Resource Management. Howland recently completed his Masters of Education in Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership from the University of Washington. During that time he worked as an assistant in donor relations for Viking Athletics. More recently, Howland worked in the Portland State University Office of Development.
