Vikings Fall to Hornets in Straight Sets

PORTLAND
– The Vikings fell in straight sets to Sacramento State Saturday night at the Peter W. Stott Center. The Hornets took the match by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-19.
 
Freshman OH Jenna Mullen led the Vikings with 10 kills and was the only Viking with double-digit kills. Mullen hit .381 from the floor going 10-for-21 with two errors.
 
Sacramento State led nearly the entire match and out-hit the Vikings .356-to-.159. The Hornets also held a 13.0-to-4.0 blocking advantage.
 
Sophomore S Kylie Copple recorded her second career double-double for the Vikings with 31 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore L Tasha Bojanic added 10 digs.
 
The Hornets took an early lead in the first set. The Vikings pulled within one at 14-13 but three-straight points by Sacramento State put it up 17-13. The Vikings put points together late, but the Hornets took the set 25-19.
 
Sacramento State controlled much of the second set as it went on several 4-0 runs. The Hornet went up by as much as 10 points at 19-9 before finishing out the set, 25-18, to go up two sets to none.
                                       
The third set stayed close during the early stages. The teams battled back and forth to 12-12, which included 10 ties. The Vikings put together three-straight points to go up 14-13 before the Hornets again tied it at 14-14. After trading points to 16-16, three-straight by Sacramento State put it up 19-16. The Hornets extended their lead and finished the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third.
 
Sacramento State's Lauren Kissell and Morgan Stanley each tallied double-digit kills with 12 and 11 respectively.
 
The Hornets improved to 22-5 overall and 9-3 in Big Sky Conference play with the win. The Vikings fell to 7-17 and 3-9.
 
Portland State stays home next week for its final two home matches of the season against Idaho State and Weber State.
