Vikings Drop Five-Setter to Bengals in Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho
– For the second match in three days, the Portland State volleyball team went to five sets, but this time the Vikings fell short falling to the Idaho State Bengals, 3-2, Saturday evening in Pocatello, Idaho.
 
Portland State found itself down two sets to one heading into the fourth set. The Vikings fell behind early in the set 5-2 but scored three straight points to tie it at 5-5. The Vikings then put together a run to take a 16-11 lead midway through the set.
 
The Vikings extended their lead to 19-11 before the Bengals closed the gap to three points at 22-19. Portland State closed out the set, 25-21, to tie the match 2-2.
 
The Vikings took an early 7-3 lead in the fifth set but the Bengals came back and tied the set at 9-9. The teams traded points to 10-10 before Idaho State put together four-straight points to go up 14-10. ISU took the match with a 15-11 win in the fifth.
 
The Vikings are now 2-2 in five-set matches this season after splitting a pair of five-setters this weekend.
 
Freshman OH Jenna Mullen led Portland State with a match-high 16 kills. She was one of three Vikings with double-digit kills in the match.
 
Fellow outside hitters Pati Anae and Eva Linden each added 14 kills. Anae contributed a career-high 18 digs for her team-high seventh double-double. Linden added 11 digs for her third career double-double.
 
Sophomore L Tasha Bojanic tallied a career-high 27 digs in the loss. It was her fifth 20-plus dig match of the season, second in a row. Freshman DS Hadley Heck tallied a career-high 10 digs for the Vikings as they had a season-high four players with double-digit digs.

Idaho State improved to 12-6 overall and 4-0 in Big Sky Conference play with the win while Portland State fell to 5-11 and 1-3.
 
The Vikings hit the road again next week when they travel to the University of Idaho on Thursday, Oct. 8 before heading to Cheney, Wash. where they will face the Eastern Washington Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 10.
