Vikings Tame Wildcats in Five for First Big Sky Win

OGDEN, Utah
– After going down two sets to one, the Portland State volleyball team took the final two frames to pick up its first Big Sky Conference win of the season, 3-2, over the Weber State Wildcats in Ogden, Utah.
 
Freshman OH Jenna Mullen racked up her 16th kill of the match for the final point in the fifth to give the Vikings the come from behind win on the road. Mullen finished with the 16 kills while hitting a career-high .394 in the match. She also tallied four digs and two of the team's 11 service aces.
 
The Vikings found themselves down 2-1 going in to the fourth set. It was close through the first part of the set as the teams traded points back and forth. With the score tied at 10-10, the Vikings rattled off three-straight points to go up 13-10 and force a Weber State timeout.
 
The teams again traded points out of the timeout as the Vikings led 16-14. Sophomore S Erin Clark stepped to the service line and kept the Wildcats off balance leading to five-straight points, including four-straight WSU attacking errors, to go up 21-14. The Vikings took the set 25-18 to tie the match at 2-2 and send it into a decisive fifth set.
 
The Vikings entered the match 1-1 in five set matches this season after losing at UNLV and defeating Northwestern State.
 
Riding their momentum from the fourth set, the Vikings got out to a quick 10-5 lead after more tough serving from freshmen Eva Linden and Olivia Skalbeck. The Vikings rattled off three-straight to go up 13-5 and all but put the match in the bag. After again trading points, Mullen ended it with a kill to give the Vikings the 15-8 win in the fifth, and the 3-2 win in the match.
 
It was Mullen's eighth double-digit kill performance of the season, seventh in the last eight matches. She now leads the team with 2.96 kills per set and it hitting .215 on the season.
 
Portland State was out-hit (.188-to-.150) and out-blocked (16.0-to-7.0) in the match but the Vikings had their way at the service line. They tallied a season-high 11 service aces for the second time this season.
 
Linden added 10 kills as the only other player for the Vikings with double-digit kills. Sophomore L Tasha Bojanic tallied a match-high 22 digs for the Vikings while setters Clark and Kylie Copple tallied 23 and 17 assists respectively.
 
The Vikings extended their winnings streak against the Wildcats to 12 matches dating back to the 2009 season. Portland State has now dropped just four sets to Weber State over that stretch.
 
Portland State improved to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky Conference play while Weber State fell to 5-9 and 1-2.
 
The Vikings now head to Pocatello, Idaho where they will take on the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday, Oct. 3. Idaho State defeated Sacramento State Thursday in four sets to improve to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in Big Sky play. Saturday's match is slated for a 7 p.m. MT start.
 
NOTES: Portland State matched its season high with 11 kills … Jenna Mullen recorded a match-high 16 kills … Mullen has recorded double-digit kills in seven of the last eight matches … Tasha Bojanic has tallied 20-plus digs in four matches this season.
