Eagles Take Dam Cup Game in Convincing Fashion

CHENEY, Wash.
– Eastern Washington took the first women's basketball Dam Cup matchup of the season by a score of 101-54 Thursday night in Cheney, Wash.
 
Eastern Washington shot a school-record 68-percent (34-for-50) from the floor and 69-percent from 3-point range. The Eagles went 11-for-16 from behind the arc.
 
Portland State trailed by two points at 8-6 before Eastern Washington went on a 36-7 run over the next 9:08 to go up 44-13 with just over six minutes left in the first half. Eastern Washington led 60-24 at the break after shooting 72.4-percent from the floor in the half.
 
The Eagles continued their hot shooting in the second half shooting over 61-percent for the half. They outscored the Vikings 41-30 in the second half to win by the final 47-point margin.
 
Emily Easom led the Vikings with 18 points. Easom did most of her damage at the free-throw line going a perfect 12-for-12.
                                                                                                                                                   
Portland State guard Lariel Powell got into foul trouble early with two fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game. She picked up her third foul with 3:32 remaining in the first half, which forced her to sit until the intermission. She ended up fouling out with 7:34 left in the second half with just five points and three assists.
 
Forwards Ani Avanessian and Cici West each added eight points for the Vikings.
 
Eastern Washington had five players in double-figures led by Lexie Nelson's game-high 22 points. Hayley Hodgins added 20 points for the Eagles.
 
Eastern Washington improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in Big Sky play, while Portland State fell to 3-13 and 1-4.
 
Portland State will play at the University of Idaho Saturday at 2 p.m. PT. It will be the first time that the Vandals and Vikings have faced-off since Idaho rejoined the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2014. Idaho was a founding member of the Big Sky but left following the 1995-96 season, the year prior to Portland State's entrance.
