RESULTSCORVALLIS, Ore. — Two weeks out of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, the Portland State track and field teams picked up five new Big Sky qualifying marks Friday, and improved six others at the OSU High Performance meet at Whyte Track & Field Center.
Â
Freshman
Genna Settle and junior
Jasmine Woods accounted for four of the new or improved qualifying marks between them, as they finished 1-2, respectively, in both the 100 and 200 meters with big personal bests in each event. Settle won the women's 100 meters Friday in 11.75 seconds, .18 seconds better than her previous personal best, which she set at the Oregon Relays just two week prior. Settle then ran 24.35 seconds in the 200 meters an hour later, setting another personal best by .18 seconds.
Â
Settle moves into fifth place all-time in both the 100 and 200 meters at Portland State with her performances Friday. Additionally, Settle's time in the 100 would have led the Big Sky going into the weekend, while her time in the 200 would have ranked fifth in the conference this season.
Â
Woods, meanwhile, placed second behind Settle in both the 100 and 200 meters in personal-best times of 11.80 and 24.52 seconds, respectively. Woods' time in the 200 meters set a new personal best by .42 seconds, and moves her up to eighth all-time in the event at Portland State. Woods also moved into a tie for seventh all-time in the 100 meters with her time Friday.
Â
Besides Settle and Woods, junior
Jazmin Ratcliff improved her Big Sky qualifying marks with personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters. Ratcliff ran the 100-meter hurdles in 13.63 seconds, .08 seconds better than her previous personal best, which she ran at the NCAA West Regional last season. Ratcliff's time would have also led the Big Sky going into the weekend, and moves her within just .04 seconds of
Joenisha Vinson's school record of 13.59 seconds.
Â
Ratcliff placed third behind Settle and Woods in the 200 meters as well, as she shaved .10 seconds off her old personal best with her time of 24.56 seconds.
Â
Outside of the sprints, freshman
Maggie Coleman and sophomore
T-Roy Brown qualified for the women's and men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, as they both made their PSU debuts in the event Friday. Coleman finished ninth in the women's side of the event, as she finished in 11:20.15, moving her up to second all-time in the event at Portland State. Brown also moved up to No. 2 all-time at PSU in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he finished fourth in 9:16.04, a time that would have ranked fourth in the Big Sky going into the weekend.
Â
Junior
Montaisha Moore also qualified for the Big Sky meet in the triple jump Friday, which was her first completed event of the outdoor season. Moore jumped 38-09.00 (11.81m) in the triple jump, placing her second in the event at the meet. Moore's jump would have also ranked her third in the Big Sky going into the weekend.
Â
Additionally, senior throwers
Allison Burkett and
Shae Carson improved and set Big Sky qualifying marks in the javelin and discus, respectively,. Burkett improved her qualifying mark in the javelin with a seasonal-best throw of 142-04 (43.38m). Burkett's throw placed her third in the event Friday, and would have ranked her ninth in the Big Sky going into the weekend. Carson, meanwhile, set a personal best in the discus by three and a half feet with her throw of 141-05 (43.11m).
Â
Freshman
Baileh Simms also nearly matched her qualifying mark in the long jump Friday, as she won the event by over eight inches with her jump of 19-03.50 (5.88m). Simms' jump Friday was just three-quarters of an inch short of her seasonal-best of 19-04.25 (5.90m), which ranks third in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Friday's meet featured several event debuts for PSU athletes as well. Freshman
Whitney Diggs made her PSU debuts in the 100 and 800 meters Friday, running the 100 in 12.42 and 800 in 2:15.68. Besides her, sophomore
Shannon Petrina made her PSU debut in the 200 meters with her time of 25.79 seconds, while junior
