PSU Track Alum Geronne Black Set to Compete in IAAF World Indoor Championships

PORTLAND, Ore. — Ten-time Big Sky champion and Portland State track alum Geronne Black will compete in the 60 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland this weekend for Trinidad & Tobago.

Black will run in the heats of the 60 meters at 10:40 a.m. local time (1:40 a.m. pacific time) on Saturday, March 8. The semifinals of the 60 meters will then follow on Sunday, March 9 at 3:15 p.m. local time (6:15 a.m. pacific time), with the finals set for 6:05 p.m. local time (9:05 a.m. pacific time) later that day.

Black qualified for the world championships after finishing seventh in the NYH&RC Women's 60-meter dash at the NYRR Millrose Games on Feb. 15. Black finished in 7.30 seconds at the Millrose Games, beating the IAAF qualifying standard of 7.32.

"Geronne is a testament to consistent hard work, and proof that it's there for those who are willing to put in the work," PSU head coach Ronnye Harrison said, who has continued to coach Black after she graduated from Portland State last summer.

Black left Portland State with the school and Big Sky records in the indoor 55 meters, indoor 60 meters, outdoor 100 meters and outdoor 4x100-meter relay. Additionally, Black won four straight Big Sky indoor titles in the conference's shortest distance (the 55 or 60 meters), and won three titles in the outdoor 100 meters.

Black also qualified for the NCAA Outdoor West Regional in each of her last three seasons at Portland State, and became just the second Viking ever to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championships when she qualified in the 60 meters last season.
