PORTLAND – The Portland State women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Friday night in a 56-50 win over the United State Naval Academy at the Peter W. Stott Center.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 11-0 run holding the Midshipmen scoreless for the first 5:02 of the contest. Navy picked up its first points of the game on a three-pointer with 14:58 on the clock.

The Midshipmen came into the game dependent on the three-point field goal and that was the case Friday. Navy went 8-for-28 from three-point range and 19-for-68 from the floor. The Midshipmen went 3-for-9 from distance in the first half and 5-for-19 in the second half.

Navy pulled within six points on another three-pointer late in the first half and trailed 26-20 at the break.

Emily Easom led the way for the Vikings with a game-high 14 points. Easom, who entered the game leading the Vikings in scoring with 13.6 points per game, went 4-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Easom also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds.

Alicia Carline led the Vikings with a career-high 14 rebounds. Carline added 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting for her second straight double-double before fouling out late in the second half. She tallied two of the Vikings' six assists.

Navy quickly pulled within two points with a pair of quick field goals in the second half. Navy pulled within one at 33-32 with 12:19 remaining but the Vikings went on a 6-0 run to go up again by seven at 39-32. Senior F
Mikaela Rivard started the run with a jumper followed by a layup by Easom.

Lariel Powell then stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for the layup. Portland State out-scored Navy 10-0 in fast-break points and 38-18 in the paint as the Midshipmen struggled down low. Powell scored 13 points going 5-for-13 from the floor.

Portland State allowed Navy to pull within two at 41-39 but that was the closest the Midshipmen would get throughout the remainder of the contest. The Vikings went up by nine at 54-45 with less than two minutes remaining and then secured the six-point win with a pair of free throws from Easom.

Portland State never trailed in the game and improved to 1-5 on the season. Navy fell to 5-4.

The Vikings have a quick turnaround as they head to Spokane, WA for a 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 tipoff with the Gonzaga. The Vikings will play six of their next seven games on the road.
