A Cold Night In Eugene Gives Vikings First Loss Of The Season

Boxscore - HTM | PDF

Eugene, OR
  - It was a stone cold night for the Vikings at Matthew Knight Arena as Portland State was outshot by the Oregon Ducks, 81-59.

PSU was as chilly from the field as the 32-degree temperatures in Eugene at tip-off. The Vikings made only 17 of 66 for a .258 mark. Oregon played a role in that poor shooting, blocking 12 Viking shots.

Oregon, led by 19 points from Joseph Young and Jalil Abdul-Bassit, shot 29-64 from the field for a .453 percentage. The Ducks made 11 three-pointers to just four for the Vikings.

Portland State went into the game attempting to beat a second Pac-12 team in the same season for the first time in school history. PSU had already beaten USC on Nov. 15. But the poor shooting eliminated that hope.

The Vikings go to 4-1 on the season with the loss, while Oregon improves to 4-2.

The Ducks missed their first five shots as the Vikings jumped to an 8-2 lead. Then Portland State went cold, missing 15 straight shots. That sparked a 27-1 Oregon run fueled by five three-pointers. Abdul-Bassit hit four of those threes for the Ducks. The Vikings were down 20, 29-9, with 9:22 left in the first half.

Oregon maintained that double-digit lead throughout the half. The closest PSU came was a 12-point deficit. But when Casey Benson buried a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer, the Ducks were back up by 20 at 50-30.

Abdul-Bassit had 19 points by halftime, hitting 6-7 field goals and 5-6 three-pointers. More significantly, Oregon shot 17-33 (.515) from the field in the half, while the Vikings made only 8-34 (.235).

After quick buckets from Gary Winston and Tim Douglas to open the second half, the Vikings went cold again, missing nine straight from the field. Oregon's lead grew as high as 27 points as the Ducks rolled to their fourth win of the season.

DaShaun Wiggins led the Vikings with 15 points. Bryce White and Braxton Tucker each had 10 points. White led the Vikings with eight rebounds.

"We had some good looks, that was the frustrating thing," said Viking Coach Tyler Geving of his team's cold streak. "I thought Oregon's pressure was really good. They forced us to run things 25 to 30 feet away from the basket. When we had some good looks we just didn't hit them. Their pressure was better than we anticipated and we didn't do a good job of handling it."

Dillon Brooks had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Ducks. Jordan Bell added 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

GAME NOTES: Oregon holds an 11-2 all-time advantage over Portland State, including the last five meetings… the Vikings are on the road again Wednesday night playing crosstown rival University of Portland. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
