It was a convincing win as the Vikings rolled up 672 yards of offense despite losing four fumbles. Running back DJ Adams scored three touchdowns for the Vikings, while quarterback Kieran McDonagh had an impressive half of play, throwing for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

PSU also had to weather 16 penalties, but otherwise dominated Eastern Oregon of the NAIA.

The Vikings got it going early on defense as cornerback Aaron Sibley returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 PSU lead. 

After fumbling on its opening drive, Portland State's offense took off behind McDonagh and Adams. McDonagh led a 13-play, 87-yard march in the first quarter. Adams carried six times for 43 yards in the series, including a 14-yard touchdown run. That gave PSU a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, McDonagh hit Kasey Closs on a 17-yard touchdown. A few minutes later he found Roston Tatum on an 80-yard flea flicker for another score. When Adams rambled in on a 13-yard TD run at the 2:51 mark of the period, the Vikings led 36-0.

PSU totaled 296 yards in the half. McDonagh completed 7-11 passes for 170 yards and two scores. Adams had 100 yards at halftime, going for 103 on 15 carries with two touchdowns.

Marc David kicked a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter to get the Mountaineers on the board. Portland State continued moved the ball but suffered three fumbles in the quarter and failed to score. That aided the Mountaineers in finally getting into the endzone.

Still, the Viking reserves tacked on three more fourth-quarter touchdowns for the easy win. 

The 672 yards of total offense ranks 10th most all-time for PSU. The 405 rushing yards ranks fourth-most all-time.

Defensively, the Vikings forced five turnovers. In addition to Sibley's pick, linebackers Corey Crowder and Jeremy Lutali also had interceptions. Brandon Brody-Heim and Jeremy Boone each recovered fumbles.

Lutali, a sophomore transfer, started the game at middle linebacker, made a game-high 11 tackles and was in on a sack. Nick Rothstein and David Edgerson each had seven tackles. Crowder made six stops with a pass breakup, a tackle for loss and an interception.

Adams finished with 107 yards rushing as did Shaquille Richard. Justin Lilley ran for 88 yards, Nate Tago had 51 and Paris Penn added 50 rushing yards. Tatum caught three passes for 159 yards and a score.

GAME NOTES: The August 29 kickoff is the earliest start to a season in Portland State history. It marks just the fourth time PSU has played on a Thursday night, and the Vikings are 4-0 in those games… DJ Adams has five 100-yard games in 12 career games at PSU. It was Shaquille Richard's first 100-yard game… 60 Viking players participated in the game as they went two and three deep at every position… Portland State travels to California next week for a 2 p.m. game.
