PORTLANDCourtney VanBrocklin and Emily Easom combined for 39 points leading the Vikings to a 79-73 overtime win over Weber State Thursday night at the Peter W. Stott Center. The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Vikings.

"Team Basketball is what won the game for us tonight,” Head Coach Sherri Murrell said following the overtime win. “I really emphasized work the basketball, work the basketball, and they did just that. I couldn't be more pleased."

VanBrocklin finished with a game-high 22 points and a career-high 10 assists for her fourth double-double of the season and her first career points-assists double-double. She became the first Viking to have a points-assists double-double since Claire Foucher posted 11 points and 11 assists at Eastern Washington on March 6, 2010.

VanBrocklin scored her 22 points going 6-for-15 from the floor including 4-for-5 from three-point range. She was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line hitting a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining in overtime to secure the win.

"You always have to give Courtney VanBrocklin credit,” Murrell added. “Twenty-two points, 10 assists, and she played all 45 minutes. What more can you say?"

Easom scored 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting including a trio of three-pointers. Karley Lampman came up big for the Vikings with 11 points including three timely three-pointers. She also pulled down a season-high seven rebounds. Allie Brock scored 10 points and recorded a team-high eight rebounds for the Vikings.

"Allie Brock had a great game,” Murrell said. “She almost had a double-double and had some key shots from the outside that we hadn't been getting. She really stepped up. Aleigh Krug stepped up big at the end and finished strong as well. Karley Lampman really wants to finish her senior season on a good note and played very hard tonight. She hit some big threes and I was really proud of how she played.”

The Vikings were without their second leading scoring Allison Greene who missed the game due to injury. Greene had started every game this season for the Vikings averaging 10.6 points per game.

Weber State (0-28 overall, 0-19 Big Sky Conference) led for the entire first half and most of the second half before the Vikings (12-16, 6-13) took their first lead of the game on an Easom three-pointer to go up 47-46 with just under 13 minutes left in the second.

What really turned the game around for the Vikings was the effectiveness of their zone defense midway through the second half. The Vikings stymied the Wildcats offense forcing 22 turnovers for the game, which turned into 25 points.

"We talked about running zone against them later in the game,” Murrell Said. “We hadn't seen anyone run zone against them but we felt like it really threw them off and created turnovers which led to points for Courtney and others."

The teams traded the lead back and forth before Weber State tied the game at 50-50. The Vikings then went on a 7-0 run to pull out to their largest lead of the game at 57-50 with 8:36 remaining.

The Wildcats kept the game close and eventually tied it 65-65 on a free throw from Regina Okoye. Okoye matched a team-high 18 points for Weber State and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds keeping the Wildcats in the game.

The game stayed tied and Weber State had the ball with the shot clock turned off playing for the last shot. VanBrocklin then committed an ill-advised foul beyond the three-point line with three seconds remaining sending Desiree Ramos to the free-throw line for a one-and-one. Ramos missed the free throw with the rebound going to Brock sending the game into overtime.

Weber State went up by four points quickly in the five-minute overtime period but Viking freshman Aleigh Krug cut the lead to two at 71-69 with a jumper in the paint for her first bucket of the night.

Easom hit a three-pointer less than a minute later sending the Vikings up one at 72-71. After Weber State took back the lead on a layup, Lampman hit her third three-pointer of the evening to reclaim the lead for the Vikings at 75-73 with 1:35 left in overtime.

Krug worked the paint for another jumper putting the Vikings up by four at 77-73 with 41 seconds left. Krug finished the game with only four points but they could not have come at a bigger time. She also came down with a big rebound on the Vikings next possession extending the play and allowing precious time to come off the clock.

Weber State threw up a three-pointer with 17 seconds left but could not close the gap. The Vikings got the ball back and with 13 seconds remaining, VanBrocklin iced the game with a pair of free throws giving the Vikings a 79-73 final win.

The Vikings will conclude the 2012-13 season Saturday when they host the Idaho State Bengals. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Stott Center and will be Senior Day. A free lunch will be provided by the Old Spaghetti Factory starting at 1 p.m. so all fans are encouraged to come out and support the Vikings in their season finale.
