BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Portland State women's track and field team positioned itself nicely to challenge for a Big Sky indoor title entering the final day of the conference championship meet and came up just short, falling 14 points shy of its first indoor title, in Bozeman, Mont., on Saturday. Portland State finished the event with 93 points, good for second-place at the meet behind only Sacramento State. The finish is only the second time in team history that the Viks have attained that position and first time since 2006.

As has been the case for the majority the year Geronne Black took center stage on the final day of the championships and didn't disappoint as she set the new Big Sky and Portland State record in the 55-meter event, clocking in with a time of 6.86 seconds and scoring 10 team points in the process. Black followed that up with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash scoring an additional six points. Black finishes her PSU career having won a Big Sky indoor individual title in every year she has competed.

“I came here with a goal and just wanted to stick with it,” Black said. “Overall, I am satisfied, especially with being able to end my career undefeated in the 55.”

Aside from Black's broken records PSU posted several more, starting with the 55-meter hurdle event where Cassandra Sidner placed third and set the new PSU record with a mark of 7.91, besting the mark set by Joenisha Vinson. Vinson also competed in the race and placed fifth with a time of 7.93 while Jazmin Ratcliff finished seventh with a mark of 8.11. The trio combined for 12 team points in the event.

In the 400-meter event, Dominique Maloney broke another PSU mark with her time of 55.28. The sprinter bested her own record that she set this season, coming in second in the event and giving the Viks eight points to their overall team score.

To round out the PSU mark-setters, the relay team of Dejuanae Toliver, Anaiah Rhodes, Vinson and Maloney set the new Viking record in the 4x400-meter relay with their time of 3:46.50. Along with the new standard the Viks placed first in the event and recorded 10 points.

In the field events Hanna Johnson came in 8th in the shot put with a mark of 13.62 meters (44-08.25) and securing one point while Amber Rozcicha did her part contributing a total of nine points through two events, posting a time of 4:59.27 in the mile with four team points and a fifth-place finish, while she came in fourth in the 3,000-meter event with a mark of 9:54.47 and five points.

At the conclusion of the meet, Vinson had earned one more accolade to her already sterling resume as she named one of the Big Sky Women's Track and Field MVPs. Vinson was a part of or directly responsible 40 of the Vikings 93 team points.

On the men's side Sean MacKelvie recorded four of the men's seven team points when he came in fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 14.26m (46-09.50).

Meanwhile the 4x400-meter relay team of Briley Beaton, Chris Fasching, Sheldon Prince and J.J. Rosenberg took sixth with a mark of 3.17.10, accounting for three team points.

The Portland State men's team finished in 11th place with seven team points to finish the event.

The Viks will not turn their attention to outdoor season when the team opens up in the Oregon Preview, in Eugene, Ore., on March 16.
