BOZEMAN, Mont. – Senior
Joenisha Vinson got the first day of the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships off with a bang for Portland State finishing first in the event with a score of 3,922 points through the five events, breaking her previous school record of 3,686 set in 2012. After one day in the books the Viks sit in second place with 10 team points, only one point back of Montana State.
Vinson finished in first or second place in four of the five events, coming in just eight points shy from setting the new Big Sky standard.
The senior registered a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 8.00 seconds, .04 seconds behind the leader, Shaye Maurer from Southern Utah. Vinson finished second in the next event, recording a mark of 1.62 meters (5-03.75) in the high jump, again finishing behind Maurer.
Vinson corralled a third-straight second-place finish with her mark of 12.08m (39-07.75) in the shot put, this time finishing .02 meters behind Montana State's Sarah McGee.
The Phoenix, Ariz., native bested all entrants in the long jump, coming in first with a mark of 5.66m (18-07.00), while she clinched the event championship with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:25.17.
With Vinson taking the women's pentathlon the rest of the day was taken up by the men's heptathlon. Portland State didn't place an entrant in the event.
