Boise, ID - Boise State broke away from a close game at halftime to beat Portland State, 76-60, at Taco Bell Arena.
After a strong first half against the nation's top scoring team, Portland State went cold in the second half and couldn't keep up. The Broncos out-scored the Vikings 42-30 after intermission.Â
Ryan Watkins and Derrick Marks each scored 14 points to lead four Boise State players in double figures. Watkins also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
DaShaun Wiggins scored 19 points with three assists off the bench for the Vikings.Â
With the win, Boise State stayed perfect at 6-0 on the season, while the Vikings dropped to 4-2.
Portland State held Boise State in check in the first half. The Broncos entered the game averaging 102 points per game but PSU kept it close throughout the half. The Broncos finally took a 10-point lead with 2:11 to go. However, the Vikings scored the final six points of the half to close it to 34-30 at intermission.
Aaron Moore and Tim Douglas each had 10 points at halftime for the Vikings.
The Broncos went on a 15-5 run to open the second half and take control of the game.
"We had two or three careless turnovers before that first timeout," said Viking Coach Tyler Geving. "We turned the ball over and were not executing very well."
The Vikings had nine turnovers total in the second half and shot just 39% from the field. Boise State also outrebounded PSU to pull away for the win. Still, the Vikings held the high-scoring Broncos to their lowest point total of the year.
Moore fouled out without scoring in the second half. He had 10 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Douglas finished the game with 12 points.
Boise State made 22-25 at the free throw line with the bulk of those shots coming in the second half. The Broncos outrebounded the Vikings, 40-26.
Portland State finished the game shooting 22-51 overall (.431) and only 8-15 at the free throw line (.533).
GAME NOTES: The Vikings' four-game winning streak - its longest since 2011-12 - came to an end… both of Portland State's losses this season have come to Mountain West Conference opponents (UNLV and Boise State)…. Portland State's road losing streak is now 18, dating to late in the 2011-12 season… JR C Brandon Cataldo was unable to play due to injury. He should return next week… Portland State comes home for a cross-town rivalry game next week. The Vikings will host the University of Portland on Dec. 7 at 7:05 p.m. at the Stott Center.
