Portland, OR - Like so many times in recent seasons, the Portland State Vikings relied on their running game, and it worked to great effect as PSU rolled over Weber State, 45-24, at JELD-WEN Field.
The Viking ground game rushed 58 times for 350 yards in the win. Senior DJ Adams led the way with a career-high 32 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns.Â
The Vikings were without their number two back Shaquille Richard, but a few other players made big contributions. Freshman Nate Tago carried the ball six times for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and tight end Hayden Plinke ran the ball 10 times in a wildcat formation for 79 yards. Justin Lilley added 41 yards on three carries.
"We have many weapons, may guys that can run the ball," said Adams. "Nate came in and did great today. He's a young guy still learning, but he's learning fast.
"It was good to get things going. Through our ups and downs, the offensive line has always stayed consistent and it was good for them to put the puzzle pieces together today," said Adams.
In all, PSU went for 480 yards of offense in a convincing win. Collin Ramirez got the start at quarterback for the Vikings. He completed 10-22 passes for 130 yards, one touchdowns and one interception. Thomas Carter caught a 36-yard score from Ramirez and had 85 yards on five catches overall.
Portland State's win was its second in a row and got the Vikings over .500 at 5-4 on the season. PSU is 2-3 in the Big Sky Conference. Weber State dropped to 1-8, 0-5 this year.
Portland State took a 10-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Weber State came back with a field goal to cut the lead to seven. When Adams scored on a seven-yard run early in the second quarter the Vikings were ahead 17-3. Weber State never came closer than 14 points after that.
The Vikings took advantage of a Weber State mistake late in the second quarter. A dropped swing pass ruled as a lateral was picked up by PSU safety David Edgerson, who took it back 28 yards for a touchdown. That made it 24-3 Portland State.
Defensively, PSU was solid for the third straight game. The Vikings allowed only 59 rushing yards on 33 carries. Only a strong effort by Weber State quarterback Austin Chipoletti could keep the Wildcats in the game. Chipoletti was 26-47 passing for 331 yards. A big chunk of that yardage came in the fourth quarter as Weber State was trying to come back.
Edgerson had six tackles and a blocked field goal to go with his fumble return for touchdown. Jaycob Shoemaker led the Vikings with 10 tackles, a sack and a pass breakup. Aaron Sibley made five tackles and recovered a fumble in the game.
GAME NOTES: DJ Adams finished the game with 1,006 rushing yards on the season. It marks the 18th time in school history that a Viking player has reached 1,000 yards. Adams now has 11 touchdowns to lead the team… it was the sixth 100-yard game of the season for Adams and the 10th of his career… the Vikings went into halftime leading 24-10, but it could have been more. They had one drive halted on a fourth-down play on the Weber State six-yard line. And, kicker Marcus Kinsella, who earlier made a 47-yard field goal, missed a 25-yarder on the final play of the first half… PSU's defense has given up only 164 rushing yards in the last three games on 102 opponent carries (1.6 ypc)... Portland State travels to Idaho State next Saturday looking for a third straight win. The Vikings and Bengals meet in a 2 p.m. PT game that will air on Freedom 970 AM and www.freedom970.com.
