Chandler, AZ - The Vikings bid for a third straight Big Sky Conference Golf Championship was not to be, but Tiffany Schoning and Britney Yada starred on the final day of the tournament for the Vikings. Yada tied the Big Sky Tournament record with a five-under par 67, and Schoning posted a one-under par 71 to finish tied for second, one shot behind the winner, Carleigh Silvers of Northern Colorado.

Portland State placed fifth overall in the tournament, shooting scores of 312-295-300=907. Northern Colorado beat Sacramento State in an extremely close finish. The two schools were still tied with two players each left on the course. But UNC came in with a one-shot victory. The Bears posted 290-299=291=880 to tie the Big Sky Tournament record set by Portland State last year. Sacramento State came in at 296-291-295=882.

Silvers shot 71-73-69 to capture the individual title, beating her sister Chelsea by a shot on the final hole. Chelsea Silvers and Schoning each tied for second at 214.

Schoning shot 75-68-71=214. The senior from Bend, OR had four birdies on the day, going out in 36 and coming in with 35. She had a nine-footer on 18 for birdie that just missed the cup on the high side.

With a 214 total, Schoning posted the best 54-hole total of her PSU career. The previous best was 218. It is just the fifth time in school history that a Viking has shot under par for 54 holes.

"The round was a struggle," Schoning said. "I started off really well, making a birdie on one and stuck it close on two, but missed the putt. I think there were maybe some nerves going on there.

"But I got up and down from everywhere today. I was hitting really good shots from the middle of nowhere. I had to make those to keep myself in it."

In fact, Schoning holed a bunker shot for birdie on number 12 from a plugged lie. At that point she was three-under par and tied for the lead.

"I'm pretty sure it the was the best shot of my life," she said. "I didn't even know how to hit it. (Assistant coach) Michael (Charles) and I were talking about it and how to hit it. He said a good shot is within 30 feet. But I hit it and it went in."

"It was definitely good to end on a good note. There was not a lot I could have done differently," said Schoning.

Meanwhile, Yada was brilliant making four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the front nine, turning in 32. After six straight pars on the back, she made another birdie on 16 to get to five-under for the day. The Viking junior then stuffed short iron shots to 10 feet on both 17 and 18, but burned the edge of the cup on both birdie tries, finishing with 67. Her five-under total breaks the Portland State school record of 68 that Yada shared (2011 Big Sky Championship) along with Schoning (Monday) and Taya Battistella (in the 2003 Big Sky Championship).

Yada, who was the Big Sky medalist in 2011 with a tournament-record six-under 210, ended at 74-76-67=217. She was tied for fifth overall. The 67 was Yada's lowest competitive round ever.

"I had nothing to lose, so I started attacking," Yada said. "Once I made three straight birdies on the front and I turned in 32 I just wanted to keep on going with it. I had a lot of opportunities on the back, they just weren't falling. But, I didn't get frustrated and there were no bogeys."

In fact, Yada had 13 pars and five birdies in her round. "My driver was really straight and I don't think I missed a fairway today. It was awesome for me."

Yada tied Bethany Leclair, formerly of Northern Arizona, who has also shot 67 in the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament (2011).

Sophomore Loren Forney and freshman Kelly Miller each tied for 34th in the field of 45. Miller shot 82 on Tuesday and Forney came in with 85. Both players shot 241 for the tournament.

Sophomore Samantha Webb posted an 80 in the final round and finished at 246 overall. She placed 37th.
