Chandler, AZ - For the second day in a row a Portland State golfer fired a two-under par 70 as
Tiffany Schoning led the Vikings to a third-place finish at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. On Tuesday, it was
Britney Yada who shot 70 as PSU made a big climb on the leaderboard. Schoning followed with her own round of 70 on Wednesday.
Portland State finished the tournament at 303-394-304=901, easily its best performance in nine events this year. The Vikings came in 17 shots behind champion Iowa (289-301-294=884) and 11 shots back of second-place Colorado State (292-292-306=890) at Ocotillo Golf Resort.
In addition, the Vikings beat the other seven Big Sky Conference schools participating at Ocotillo on the same site that will host the Big Sky Championship, April 22-24. PSU also placed ahead of eight schools previously ranked higher in the golfstat.com rankings.
Brianna Espinoza of Colorado State won the Cowgirl Classic with a stellar eight-under par total of 68-68-72=208. Second place Kristi Cardwell of Iowa was at three-under par 213.
Schoning climbed all the way to fourth place with a final round that included four birdies. The Viking senior got better every day, shooting 75-73-70=218. That two-over par total tied her career-best score at Portland State. It was also her third top-five finish of the season.
Yada came in at even-par 72 on Wednesday and placed fifth overall. She posted 77-70-72=219.
Loren Forney tied for 58th among the 128 golfers competing. The sophomore posted 74-75-84=233.
Freshman
Kelly Miller shot 78 on Wednesday, improving her position 15 spots on the leaderboard. Miller came in at 77-82-78=237 to tie for 75th.
Samantha Webb tied for 106th in at the Cowgirl Classic, shooting 83-76-87=246.

Kelly Miller's 237 total was nine shots better than her previous best at PSU (246).
• Portland State's second-round 294 was easily a season best, beating the previous best of 303 set in the first round.
• The six-time Big Sky Conference Champion Vikings (2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011) will defend their title at Ocotillo on April 22-24… PSU has won its last three events at Ocotillo. The 2011 Cowgirl Classic, the Vikings and the 2010 and 2011 Big Sky Conference Championships.
