Oro Valley, AZ - The Portland State women's golf team opened its spring season with a 13th-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational, one of the top collegiate golf tournaments in the western region.

The Vikings shot 332-308-333=973 to place 13th among 14 teams in a star-studded field. PSU beat the only other Big Sky Conference school competing, Northern Arizona (975), in the 54-hole event at the Vistoso Golf Club.

Meanwhile, 22nd-ranked Arizona upset top-ranked UCLA by 12 shots to win its own event. The Wildcats shot 285-274-292=851, a 13-under par team total. UCLA came in at 289-283-291=863. The Bruins were 22 shots ahead of eighth-ranked Arizona State (884).

Though not rated among the nation's top 100 players, Arizona's Manon Gidali took a seven-shot individual victory over teammate Margarita Ramos. Gidali shot 66-67-71=204 for a 12-under par total. Ramos was at five-under 211, while UCLA's ninth-ranked Erynne Lee came in third at three-under 213.

Portland State's top finisher was junior Britney Yada, who placed in a tie for 21st in the 79-player field. Yada shot 75-73-79=227 over the 54-hole event.

Senior Tiffany Schoning shot her best score of the event on Tuesday with a 79. She came in at 242 overall to tie for 59th place.

Kelly Miller, a freshman, tied for 64th overall with 82-76-88=246. Her middle round was a personal best at Portland State, as was her 54-hole total.

Sophomore Loren Forney was 75th with 93-79-89=261. Freshman Emily Podlesny shot 92-87-87=266 to place 77th.

• The Wildcat Invitational will certainly be the Vikings' most challenging tournament of the season, Eight teams were ranked in the top 50 and 13 in the top 100. Only Portland State (124) and Northern Arizona (128) were outside the top 100. A total of 254 schools compete in golf at the Division I level.
• PSU's overall head-to-head record in 2011-12 is 33-39-1. The Vikings are 15-5 in head-to-head scoring with Big Sky Conference opponents.
• PSU's 308 total on Monday was the fourth-best round of the season for the Vikings among 15 played. The season-low is 305.
• Yada is the team's scoring leader this season with a 76.93 scoring average. Her 227 total was her second-best tournament among five played this year (223).
• Portland State's next tournament is the Peg Barnhard Invitational, hosted by Stanford, Feb. 18-19.
