Vikings Finish Eighth, Schoning Fourth, At Rose City Collegiate

Long Beach State was the wire-to-wire winner of the second annual Rose City Collegiate Women's Golf Tournament, winning the 54-hole event with scores of 298-299-303=900 at Langdon Farms Golf Club. The 49ers led by 10 going into Tuesday's final round and held their lead with a 10-stroke win over Fresno State (910).

Portland State senior Tiffany Schoning shot an even-par 72 in the final round, giving her a 224 total and tying for fourth on the individual leader board. It was the best round by a Viking over two days, however PSU remained in eighth place in the 14-team field, finishing with 306-323-312=941.

Rochelle Chan of Long Beach State shot a final-round 78 but held on to win the individual title by three shots with 66-76-78=220.

Despite being in the middle of the pack, the Vikings can take consolation in beating the other three Big Sky Conference schools in the field: Weber State (959); Northern Colorado (964); and Eastern Washington (991).

Viking junior Britney Yada tied for 28th in the 78-player field with 76-78-82=236. Sophomore Loren Forney placed 43rd, shooting 80-81-80=241.

Also scoring for the Vikings were sophomore Samantha Webb, 79-86-78=243, and freshman Kelly Miller, 77-87-85=249. Webb tied for 48th while Miller tied for 61st.

Competing as individuals for the Vikings were Emily Podlesny (252, t67th) and Katie Ortman (264, 76th).

TAP-INS: Portland State was tied for third after round one, but dropped to eighth after two rounds… PSU cut 11 shots off its round two score… last year, PSU finished third in the Rose City Collegiate… Schoning leads the Vikings with a 75.33 scoring average through three tournaments this year… PSU is 10-3 in head-to-head scoring against Big Sky schools this year.
