Schoning Shoots Even Par 72, Vikings Place 12th

- Senior Tiffany Schoning shot a final-round even-par 72 today at the WSU Cougar Cup to place 25th among 86 golfers. Schoning had two birdies and two bogeys to post a 79-81-72=232 at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

The Viking team had its poorest finish in a regular season tournament in two seasons, placing 12th among 13 teams. This came after a second-place finish at the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational just a week ago.

PSU shot 325-323-309=957 and finished fourth among five Big Sky Conference teams competing in the event. Washington won the team title by 12 strokes over Stanford with 309-285-296=890.

On the individual leaderboard, Stanford's Sally Watson climbed from fifth place to win the event. Her two-under par 70 on Tuesday allowed her to beat three other players by one shot with 79-71-70=220.

Viking junior Britney Yada placed in a tie for 44th shooting 83-77-77=237. Sophomore Samantha Webb tied for 57th at 79-82-82=243.

Also scoring for the Vikings were freshman Kelly Miller (84-83-81=248) and Loren Forney (90-84-79=253). Miller tied for 70th, while Forney placed 80th.

Freshman Emily Podlesny tied for 73rd (87-80-82=249) and sophomore Katie Ortman was 86th (99-93-87=279). Both players competed as individuals not counting toward the team score.

TAP-INS: Windy conditions had scores higher than usual on the first day of play… PSU can take consolation in the Tuesday improvement of 16 and 14 strokes over Monday's first two rounds… through the first six rounds of the season, Tiffany Schoning leads the Vikings with a 75.67 scoring average… the Vikings are now 7-3 in head-to-head scoring with Big Sky schools… next Monday and Tuesday, Portland State will host the second annual Rose City Collegiate Golf Tournament at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora. Fourteen teams will compete in the 54-hole event.
