Viking Golfers Finish 20th At NCAA West Regional

NCAA West Regional Final Results

Auburn, WA
- The Portland State women's golf team wrapped up the NCAA West Regional Championship in 20th place at Washington National Golf Club.

In challenging conditions on Saturday, Lauren Taylor shot the best round of the day for Portland State. The Viking freshman fired a five-over par 77. She placed in a tie for 63rd among 126 players with 234 over 54 holes.

It was cool and damp all week at Washington National Golf Course. But the Vikings had the disadvantage of being in Saturday's afternoon wave when play was stopped for 45 minutes due to heavy rains. That didn't help PSU's back-nine scoring.

PSU finished with 305-311-326=942 and placed 20th among 24 teams overall. The Vikings entered the tournament seeded 20th.

Number-one ranked USC won the West Regional by 10 shots over 13th-ranked Tennessee. The Trojans finished at two-over par 866 for the 54-hole tournament. Tennessee was 12-over par 876.
Sixth-ranked Virginia and 22nd-ranked UC Davis tied for third at 887. The top eight teams from the Regional advance to the National Championship tournament at The Traditions Course in College Station, TX on May 18-21. The other four qualifiers were Arizona, South Carolina, Washington and Texas A&M. Oregon missed qualifying by one stroke.

Tennessee's Erica Popson led the tournament from wire-to-wire and won the individual title by shooting an eight-under par 208. That was five shots better than the nation's second-ranked player, Lizette Salas of USC. Salas came in at three-under par 213. Sophia Popov was the only other player under par for the tournament, shooting a one-under 215.

Viking Sophomore Britney Yada recorded an 80 on the final day. She shot 239 for the week and tied for 89th.

Senior Kalyn Dodge was the top finisher for Portland State at the Regional. She tied for 56th overall shooting 73-76-83=232.

Junior Tiffany Schoning tied for 77th with 78-73-86=237.

Senior Alexia Brown shot 91 in the final round. Her total of 251 was 122nd overall.
