Yorba Linda, CA - With her best career placing in four seasons at Portland State,
Alexia Brown led the Viking golf team to a third-place finish at the Gold Rush Tournament on Tuesday. Brown shot 76-72-79=227 to tie for fourth on the individual leader board, her top finish as a Viking in 35 career tournaments.
Portland State took third overall - an excellent result after being ranked seventh among the 12 teams going into the event at Yorba Linda Country Club. The Vikings shot 312-315-315=942 as they held their third-place position after 36 holes. San Diego State won the Gold Rush with 305-310-303=918. The Aztecs had an eight-stroke advantage over host Long Beach State, the second place finisher, at 312-306-308=926.
Brown's 227 was one stroke off her career-best 54-hole score as a Viking. Brown's second-round even-par 72 was one of just three even-par rounds shot in the tournament. It also tied her career-best round at PSU.
Sophomore
Britney Yada had a strong finish, shooting 77 on Tuesday. She completed the tournament tied for eighth at 76-78-77=231. It was Yada's third straight top-10 and the seventh in 16 career events.
Simone Hoey of Long Beach State led the tournament from wire-to-wire in capturing medalist honors. Hoey shot 73-74-72=219 for a five-over par score. Hoey won by six strokes over teammate Monica Villareal (225).
Viking senior
Kalyn Dodge climbed six spots on the leaderboard Tuesday to tie for 26th with, among others, teammate
Tiffany Schoning. Dodge finished at 81-82-79=242. Schoning shot 79-83-80=242.
Freshman
Loren Forney shot 86-89-89=264 to tied for 62nd place.
Ranked 106th by Golfweek going into the tournament, the Vikings bettered four top-100 teams: Brigham Young (76), New Mexico State (55), Gonzaga (99) and Colorado State (70). San Diego State (47) and Long Beach State (82) were also ranked ahead of the Vikings (there are 254 teams in Division I).
TAP-INS: Yada made five birdies on Tuesday (after making six birdies in Monday's first round). Her total of 11 birdies led the tournament… with a 76.63 scoring average in 46 career rounds, Yada currently holds the school record at PSU… with 97 career rounds played, Brown ranks fourth all-time at PSU. Her 79.15 career scoring average also ranks sixth all-time at PSU… Brown was the team scoring leader for the fifth time in her 35-tournament career… in head-to-head scoring this season, Portland State is 42-16-1 overall. The Vikings' full-field tournament finishes are, in order, eighth (of 20), third (of 15), fourth (of 11), second (of 7) and third (of 12)… Portland State returns to play on Mar. 7-8 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. There will be four more events prior to the Big Sky Conference Championship, Apr. 18-20, in Chandler, AZ.
