LAST YEAR: SACRAMENTO STATE 28, PORTLAND STATE 15
Portland State held the Hornets to 68 yards rushing and 308 yards total, but lost 28-15 in Sacramento. After falling behind 21-3, the Vikings held the Hornets without a score for more than 30 minutes. PSU closed the gap to 21-15 early in the fourth quarter, but Chase Deadder caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Fleming midway through the period to put the game on ice. The Vikings had held SAC without a yard of offense in the third period, but managed only a pair of second-half field goals. Fleming was 13-23 passing for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Cory McCaffrey rushed for 187 yards and a score in the loss.

VIKINGS CONTINUE STRETCH RUN HOSTING SACRAMENTO STATE
Portland State continues its quest for a winning record and potential post-season berth this Saturday when the Vikings host Sacramento State at JELD-WEN Field. Kickoff for the Big Sky Conference game is 1:05 p.m. as it airs on Freedom 970 AM and www.970.am. The pregame show begins at noon.

The Vikings improved to 5-3 on the season with a big 43-26 road win over defending national champion Eastern Washington last Saturday. PSU now stands at 3-2 in Big Sky play. If the Vikings can win out their final three games, they would have a chance at the NCAA post-season.

But, first things first, as the Vikings will go after their first winning record since 2006. A win this Saturday over the Hornets would achieve that goal.

Meanwhile Sacramento State has had a remarkably up-and-down year, opening with a 29-28 win over Pac-12 Oregon State, following that with two road losses, then coming back to beat Montana, 42-28. The Hornets are now 2-3 in the Big Sky Conference, 3-5 overall after a 27-26 home loss to Northern Arizona on Saturday.

Sacramento State has won the last three meetings with Portland State. Prior to that PSU had won eight straight in the series under former coach Tim Walsh. PSU still leads the series all-time (21-9) and in Big Sky games (11-4). This is the18th straight year the teams have met and 28th time in 29 years.

PSU is 3-1 at home this season and will play two of their final three games at home. After Sacramento State, the Vikings face Northern Colorado on the road on Nov. 12, then have the season finale at home against Weber State on Nov. 19.

The 20-team NCAA playoffs begin on Nov. 26. Team selections take place on Nov. 20. The Big Sky Champion receives an automatic berth.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Sacramento State has had a strange season to say the least. The Hornets opened with a win over a Pac-12 school, Oregon State, added a first-ever Big Sky win against Montana, but have only managed a 3-5 record overall. But for an overtime loss to Eastern Washington, and a one-point defeat to Northern Arizona last week, the Hornets could be 5-3 like the Vikings.

Despite the sub-.500 mark, Sacramento State has a talented group and holds a three-season winning streak over the Vikings. Fifth-year Head Coach Marshall Sperbeck has made the Hornets one of the better teams in the Big Sky Conference during his tenure.

Bryan Hilliard leads a strong running game for Sacramento State with 564 yards and six touchdowns. Quarterback Jeff Fleming rushed for 304 yards and three touchdowns through six games, but has been injured. Sophomore Tommy Edwards and freshman Garrett Safron have shared quarterbacking duties since.

Sacramento State averages 171.9 yards on the ground and 192.4 yards in the air. The Hornets have scored just 20 times on 32 redzone trips, including 19 touchdowns.

Morris Norrise has 25 receptions for 353 yards, while Brandyn Reed has caught 22 passes for 464 yards and six touchdowns.

The Hornets are giving up 393.1 yards per game, with opponents averaging 182.9 yards on the ground. Last week, Northern Arizona rushed for 257 yards.

Linebacker Todd Davis has a team-leading 72 tackles this season. Safety Ryan McMahon has 70 tackles. Defensive tackle Zach Nash leads the team with 5.5 sacks.

Special teams are not a strength as the Hornets are 1-6 on field goals and rank last in punting with an average of 35.5 yards and a net average of 31.5. However, the Hornets lead the Big Sky in punt returns with a 13.6 average. John Hendershott's 26.7 kick return average also leads the Big Sky.

KAVANAUGH SETS NEW BIG SKY RUSHING RECORD FOR QBs
SR QB Connor Kavanaugh has set a new Big Sky Conference record for quarterback rushing in a season with 807 yards. His 154-yard game at Eastern Washington has him on top of the heap in the Big Sky and Portland State. Kavanaugh passed the mark of 686 yards by Lance Kriesien, who quarterbacked the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in 2007.

Kavanaugh also has 1,711 career rushing yards which currently ranks second in Big Sky history. Ken Hobart of Idaho (1980-83) holds the career record with 1,826 yards.

ON THE NATIONAL CHARTS
Portland State ranks fourth in the nation in rushing offense with an average of 279.0 yards per game. PSU has 2,232 rushing yards this season, four yards short of last year's total and just 16 yards short of the school record (2,248).

PSU is 12th in the nation in total offense (435.1) and 17th in scoring offense (34.6).

Connor Kavanaugh ranks 19th in the nation in rushing with 100.9 yards per game. Kavanaugh is third in the Big Sky in rushing.

Despite averaging 146.2 rushing yards and 15.6 points per game, Cory McCaffrey no longer qualifies for national leadership because he has not played in enough games (5).

Kicker Zach Brown made three more field goals at Eastern Washington, increasing his season total to 14-15 made. That ranks in a tie for third in the nation (1.75 per game). He leads the Big Sky in field goals made and percentage.

After grabbing his third interception of the season at Eastern Washington  - which he returned for a touchdown - linebacker Joel Sisler ranks 19th in the country in pickoffs, second in the Big Sky.

Linebacker Ian Sluss leads the Big Sky and ranks 26th in the nation in tackles for loss (10.5/1.50 average).

SISLER, BROWN NAMED BIG SKY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Portland State linebacker Joel Sisler and kicker Zach Brown have both been named Big Sky Conference Players of the Week following the Vikings' 43-26 win over Eastern Washington.

Sisler, a 6-2, 210-pound junior, was named the Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Week after returning an interception 23 yards for a touchdown, making five tackles and a sack in the victory. Sisler intercepted Bo Levi Mitchell and returned it for a touchdown with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter to give the Vikings an insurmountable 36-20 lead. Sisler also had a quarterback hurry. He has three interceptions and two fumble recoveries this season. This is his first career Player of the Week honor.

Brown, a 6-1, 200-pound junior from Keizer, OR, made three field goals and finished with 12 points in Portland State's 43-26 win over Eastern Washington. Brown connected on two field goals of 38 yards and also hit from 41. He also executed a pooch kick that was recovered by the Vikings in the third quarter. Brown has made 14-of-15 field goals this season. This is Brown's fifth career Player of the Week honor.

FACTS, FIGURES AND CURIOSITIES
WINS AND LOSSES:
Portland State is 2-2 on the road this year after winning at Eastern Washington, 43-26. It marks the first time PSU has won two Big Sky road games since 2007... with five wins, PSU has more than the last two years combined (4-18), and the most since going 7-4 in 2006 under Tim Walsh... the Vikings are 3-1 at home... PSU is 54-30 in home games since moving to the NCAA I level, 27-62 on the road... PSU is 53-67 all-time in Big Sky Conference games in its' 16th season as a member. The Vikings are 33-27 at home, 20-40 on the road in BSC games.

GOOD STARTS: Portland State has outscored opponents 85-25 in the first quarter this season. While 47 of those points have come in non-conference games against Southern Oregon and Willamette, PSU still has a 38-25 advantage on its other six opponents, allowing only three to score in the first quarter and leading six of eight games after the first quarter... Idaho State scored the first 11 in Pocatello and held the only lead over PSU at the end of one (11-6), but the Vikings came back to win that game, 42-35. Montana State scored in the first quarter against the Vikings, but only after PSU scored the first 10 points. PSU scored first on Eastern Washington, but trailed 7-3 at the end of the first quarter before going on to win 43-26... PSU's first quarter advantages have been: 31-0 vs. Southern Oregon; 14-0 vs. Northern Arizona; 3-0 vs. TCU; 10-7 vs. Montana State; 6-0 vs. Montana; and 16-0 vs. Willamette.

WHAT'S THE SCORE?: Portland State has scored 30 or more points in six of eight games this year, and 40 or more three times. It is the first time PSU has scored at least 40 points three times since 2005... the only times the Vikings failed to reach 30 was in a 55-13 loss at TCU and a 30-24 loss at Montana... PSU has scored 181 points in its last five games (36.2 ppg).

THE RECORD IS COMING: Portland State has 2,232 rushing yards this season and averages 5.6 yards per carry with 25 rushing touchdowns. The Vikings are only 16 yards short of the school record of 2,248 yards set  in 2004 (204.4 ypg). Last year, PSU came up just 12 yards short of the record (2,236/203.3) as Cory McCaffrey was injured in the final game and ran for only 12 yards... this season, PSU is averaging 279.0 yards per game on the ground.

NEW LOOK RUNNING GAME: The Vikings appear to be surviving the injury to star running back Cory McCaffrey, totaling 568 rushing yards in two games since he went down. PSU had 338 rushing yards at Eastern Washington spread among SR QB Connor Kavanaugh (154), SR RB Willie Griffin (career-high 84 yards), FR RB Shaquille Richards (58) and SO RB Justin Lilley (37).

FINISHING: Portland State's mantra this year has been “finish” as in finish every game strong to secure the win. Saturday's win showed the team has taken it to heart. After getting just three points on two trips inside the Eastern Washington five-yard line and falling behind 14-3, the Vikings came back with strong play on offense, special teams and defense. PSU totaled 499 yards of offense, blocked another punt, recovered a pooch kickoff, and shut down Eastern Washington's running game for a 43-26 road win... Last year, PSU had four games that it lost in the late-going in which a stronger finish might have made the difference. This year, PSU has the word FINISH on the front of every helmet. In PSU's first two Big Sky Conference games, the Vikings made plays late to “finish” and pick up wins against Northern Arizona and Idaho State. The previous two Big Sky games, both losses, the Vikings played the top two teams in the conference, nationally-ranked Montana State and Montana, down to the wire. In those two, the outcomes were losses in painfully close fashion, by a combined eight points.

SOME VERY SPECIAL TEAMS: New Special Teams Coordinator Stacy Collins might be the Viking coaching staff's “Coach of the Year” so far this season. His special teams have been terrific throughout the season. Against Eastern Washington, the special teams blocked another punt, converted a fake punt, recovered a pooch kickoff and were 3-3 on field goals. The Vikings also held the Eagles to less than 10 yards per kickoff return... Here are some season highlights:
• With eight total blocks (six punt, two FG), PSU leads the nation at the FCS level.
• The Vikings had gone five years without a punt block, but now have six this season. JR WR Nevin Lewis has three blocked punts, JR LB Dionte Brooks has two and FR TE Taylor Martinek has one.
• PSU has snuffed out two fake punt attempts by opponents this year. Meanwhile, the Vikings have converted two fake punts.
• The Vikings hadn't blocked a field goal in two years, but now have two in 2011, both by GR DT Myles Wade. Wade's block in the closing moments against Northern Arizona allowed the Vikings to hang on for the win. He also had one against Montana State.
• The Vikings' JR K Zach Brown had a school-record string of 16 straight field goals made, including his first 10 this season. He finally missed one from 53 yards. Brown is 14-15 this year extending his career field goal record to 50. He leads the Big Sky in field goals and percentage.
• The Vikings benefitted from a high snap on a punt attempt in the fourth period at Idaho State. FR WR Ronnie Simmons ran down the ISU punter for a 23-yard loss. The Vikings took over and two plays later SR RB Cory McCaffrey scored the game-winning touchdown.
• PSU's kick return team averages 22.2 per return this season. Lewis (24.7) and SR FS DeShawn Shead (22.2) lead the way in that department.
• The Vikings are 4-8 on two-point conversion attempts this year.
• Lewis and Wade have each earned Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season.

RELYIN' ON RYAN: SR LB Ryan Rau made a career-high 17 tackles, including two tackles for loss at Montana two weeks ago. His 17 stops ties for the eighth most in PSU history for a game... Rau continues to lead the Viking defense. He has been the team-leader in tackles in five games and has a team-high 70 this year. He also has 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery... Rau now has 247 tackles in his career and is on pace to finish his career in PSU's all-time top ten for tackles... Rau was also the team-leader in tackles each of the last two years (72 in 2009, 83 in 2010).

NOSE FOR THE BALL: JR LB Joel Sisler continues to be a Viking with a nose for the ball. He made the biggest defensive play of the game in the win over Eastern Washington when he picked off a pass in the third quarter and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. That gave PSU a 36-20 lead and firm grasp of the game... Sisler has a team-leading three interceptions this season to rank second in the conference. His two fumble recoveries ranks first in the conference. Sisler has 24 tackles, six tackles for loss and two other pass breakups... Sisler has five career interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

SLUSS REPORT: JR LB Ian Sluss got a late start to the season, missing the first game and not getting into the starting lineup until game three, but he has made his mark. Sluss had four tackles, three for losses, including two of the Vikings' five sacks at Eastern Washington... Sluss has 43 tackles this season to rank second on the team. He leads the Vikings and the Big Sky with 10.5 tackles for loss, and has 3.5 sacks.

ZACH BROWN AND HIS LEG OF RENOWN: JR K Zach Brown established a new consecutive field goal made record earlier this year with 16. He finally missed a 53-yarder in the fourth quarter of game six at Montana... Brown is 14-15 kicking this season and has a PSU career record total of 50 field goals - one of six records he holds. Brown has made 20-22 extra points for 51 total points this year... with 217 career points he now ranks sixth on the PSU career scoring list... at 50-66 on career field goals, Brown's .757 mark is a PSU record as well.

ZACH BROWN's PORTLAND STATE KICKING RECORDS
Field Goals, Season: 18, twice (2009, 2010)
Field Goals, Career: 50
Field Goals, Consecutive: 16
Field Goal Percentage: 50-66, .757
Field Goals, 50+ yards, Career: 5
PATs, Consecutive: 44 (tied)

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: Portland State was last in the Big Sky Conference in 2010 in rushing defense, allowing 232.9 yards per game on the ground. Included were 391 rushing yards by Northern Arizona in the 2010 season finale. On Sept 17 this year, PSU held NAU - playing the same two feature backs as last season - to just 79 rushing yards... this year, PSU is allowing a respectable 124.4 yards on the ground (and 229.0 through the air). The 353.4 yards allowed per game so far is down more than 110 yards from 464.1 last year.

HE CAN DO IT ALL: JR WR Nevin Lewis is making his name as a do-it-all Viking. He has been brilliant on special teams, blocking three punts, snuffing out a fake punt with a tackle for loss and making three tackles in all. He also has 24 kick returns for an average of 24.7 per return...  as a receiver, Lewis has 16 catches for 194 yards and a touchdown this season. He has one rush for seven yards and, at Eastern Washington, completed a 14-yard touchdown pass on a reverse play.

PLAYING LIKE SAMSON: The long flowing locks on JR WR Justin Monahan are reminiscent of the mighty Samson (although most on the team call him “Twilight” for his resemblance to a certain vampire in a famous movie/book series). Monahan played like Samson at TCU, totaling career-highs of nine receptions for 109 yards. His fourth-and-two catch at the TCU one-yard line in the fourth period kept a drive alive and led to a FR RB Shaquille Richard touchdown run... he had a big game with eight receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns at Eastern Washington. His first TD catch was on a tipped pass intended for Kalua Noa in the endzone. After Noa touched it, three Eagles players also touched it. Monahan was the fifth player to touch the ball when he secured the grab on a 14-yard touchdown... for the season, Monahan has a team-leading 32 catches for 402 yards and four touchdowns.

LED BY SHEAD: SR SS DeShawn Shead started his 41st straight game against Willamette. He is the only Viking to start and play in all 41 games over the last four seasons.

FLAGS, RAGS AND OTHER FLYING YELLOW OBJECTS: Portland State has had problems with penalties over the last five weeks. The Vikings have been penalized 73 times for 662 yards in the five games (14.6-130.4). PSU had to overcome itself as much as anything to pick up a 42-35 win at Idaho State. The Vikings commited 21 penalties for 209 yards in the game. The 21 flags was a new Big Sky Conference record and two shy of the NCAA I FCS record... in the 38-36 loss to Montana State, 15 penalties for 151 yards played a major role... PSU had 13 penalties for 88 yards at Montana... the Vikings had 12 penalties for 109 yards in the win over Willamette and 12 penalties for 110 yards in the win over Eastern Washington... in the first three games of the season, PSU had just 25 penalties for 219 yards.

NEW ATTITUDE AT HOME: Portland State is bringing a new attitude to JELD-WEN Field. After going 35-9 at home over Tim Walsh's final eight seasons, 1999-2006 (including two 5-0 marks), the Vikings were just 7-13 at home the last four years (which includes 1-3 at Hillsboro Stadium in 2010). The Vikings have started their six-game home schedule at 3-1... Head Coach Nigel Burton now has a 4-4 home record.

OCCUPY JELD-WEN: Portland State has a ways to go to fill 18,627-seat JELD-WEN Field, but the Montana State game was a big improvement as a crowd of 9,054 attended. That was the largest PSU home attendance in 15 home games dating to the 2008 season (12,071 vs. Montana on Nov. 8, 2008). The crowd total was an improvement of more than 3,500 over the Northern Arizona game. PSU is averaging 6,244 fans and has two home dates remaining (Nov. 5 vs. Sacramento State and Nov. 19 vs. Weber State).

THE VIKINGS RECORD ON TV: Since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996, Portland State has appeared on television locally in Portland 40 times. PSU is 17-24 in those games, 10-8 at home, 7-16 on the road... the Vikings broke an 11-game TV losing streak with the win over Southern Oregon. PSU is now 3-2 this season on TV.
