Portland, OR - The Big Sky Conference's leading scorer brought all of his game to the Stott Center on Saturday night and it produced a win. Northern Arizona's Cameron Jones scored 25 points and led a defeat of the Portland State Vikings, 71-59.
Jones added seven rebounds and four assists as his Lumberjacks' team shot .596 from the field in a wire-to-wire win.
It was a disappointing loss for an undermanned Viking team that was coming off a Thursday win over Weber State. PSU was back to just nine healthy bodies again. Forward
Chehales Tapscott missed the game with a knee injury suffered at the end of the win over Weber State. He is out indefinitely. Center
Nate Lozeau missed his second game was a left ankle sprain and is expected to be out another week.
The Vikings fell behind 14-2 by the 13:39 mark of the first half. The lead grew as Portland State suffered a scoring drought of five minutes and 33 seconds. NAU was up 25-7 before
Charles Odum finally made a driving three-point play with 7:10 left in the half.
The Vikings had made just 2-16 shots prior to that and committed 11 turnovers.
By halftime, PSU was just 5-24 shooting with 13 turnovers. NAU made 13-24 in the half and led 34-18 at intermission.
Portland State never got closer than 10 in the second half. NAU's lead grew to as many as 22 with 8:26 remaining.
Jones made 10-15 shots for the 'Jacks, including 3-3 from three-point range. Gabe Rogers added 16 points and Stallon Saldivar handed out eight assists. NAU improved to 11-8 on the year, 3-4 in the Big Sky Conference.
Odum led the Vikings with 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Melvin Jones added 11 points.
The Vikings managed just 22-57 from the field (.386) and 4-14 from three-point range (.286). The Lumberjacks were 28-47 (.596) and 8-17 (.471).
PSU dropped into a tie with NAU at 3-4 in the Big Sky. The Vikings are 10-9 overall.
