Portland, OR - A remarkable second-half comeback from 11 points down kept Portland State's home-court winning streak alive with a 93-89 victory over Cal State Fullerton.
Chris Harriel scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, and
Charles Odum scored nine straight points in the last 32 seconds as the Vikings picked up the win at the Stott Center.
As remarkable as the comeback was that Cal State Fullerton shot nearly 60% (34-57, .596) from the field, but the Vikings still found a way to win. It came mainly from clutch shooting by Harriel,
Melvin Jones and then Odum in the closing seconds as he made seven straight free throws.
The win improved Portland State's record to 6-2 on the season. The Vikings have now won six straight home games.
The Vikings had to weather a shooting onslaught from the Titans in the first half. Fullerton hit 20-31 shots for a .645 mark. Forwards Jer'Vaughn Johnson and Orane Chin did the most damage, combining to hit 12-17 shots for 29 points. Chin made 4-6 from three-point range and had 18 at halftime.
"We tried everything. Man-to-man, zone, 1-3-1. We couldn't stop them," said Viking Coach
Tyler Geving.
PSU shot well too, hitting 17-32 for a .531 mark, but couldn't match the quick ball movement that was getting the Titans good shots.
It didn't get much better in the second half for the Vikings as
Chehales Tapscott was saddled with foul trouble and, to that point, Harriel had made just 2-9 shots.
After falling behind 63-52 at the 13:38 mark of the second half, the Vikings showed some life. It was a slow crawl, but when Harriel hit a fast-break three-pointer at the 3:44 mark, PSU was within 77-75.
Finally, the Vikings took the lead, 83-82, on a pair of free throws by Tapscott with exactly one minute remaining.
The Titans lost their top two players, as both Johnson and Chin fouled out on offensive fouls in the final two minutes. Chin finished with 32 points and five rebounds. Johnson fouled out with 19 points and did not miss a shot, hitting seven field goals and five free throws. He also had seven rebounds.
After Chin's foul out with 48 seconds left, Odum drove the lane and converted a three-point play at the 32-second mark. With the Vikings up 86-83, CSF had to take fouls and Odum answered the call at the line.
Odum led Portland State with 21 points, hitting 6-10 from the field and 8-8 at the line, and handed out five assists. After starting poorly, Harriel finished with 20 points, hitting his last six shots from the field and making 8-15 overall, including 4-10 three-pointers.
Jones added 18 points,
Nate Lozeau scored 13 and Tapscott added 10 as five Vikings were in double figures. Tapscott led the way with seven rebounds.
Fullerton wasn't the only team to shoot well. Portland State was 32-61 from the field (.525) and 19-23 at the line (.826). The Vikings also outrebounded the Titans (30-28) and forced more turnovers than they committed (13-16).
Cal State Fullerton dropped to 3-7 on the season.
