Head Coach Bill Winter will begin his fifth season at Portland State in 2025-26. He has put together a group of talented young golfers and will boast the largest roster of his tenure.
The Vikings have four returning letterwinners with significant experience on the roster. Two are fourth-year seniors: Bayler Brundage and Payten Shimizu; and two are third-year juniors: Momo Udom and Cynthia Valerie Ong. Sophomore transfer Maddie Dustin and freshmen Caithlyn Ong and Francesca Tomp give Winter his deepest group as head coach.
Winter's connections in the golf community in Portland give his team unprecedented access to the finest courses. The Vikings have used Columbia Edgewater Country Club as a home base in recent seasons and will host the PSU Invitational there again this October.
In addition, the Viking Golf Program has proven to be at the top of the PSU Athletics Department academically. The Viking team has maintained a 3.89 GPA overall. All six members of the 2023-24 squad earned Academic All-Conference honors and all five will do so in 2024-25.
In 2022-23, PSU was the inaugural Big Sky Conference Women’s Golf Team Champion for GPA for the season (3.88) and placed second in 2023-24.
Winter was hired as the Vikings’ women’s golf coach on August 11, 2021. He is a native Portlander with a strong background in the game of golf.
A graduate of LaSalle High School and the University of Portland, Winter spent 11 seasons as the Head Coach of the men’s team at UP from 2001-11. He earned West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2008 and 2011.
More recently, Winter served as Head Coach at St. Mary’s Academy in downtown Portland.
During his professional career, Winter has also worked in private business, spending 10 years at Nike, and had two seasons as an assistant baseball coach at University of Portland.
Winter is a competitive golfer with strong ties in the Pacific Northwest golf community. He has qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship twice in the past four years. He finished among the top 100 in the nation in 2021. In 2024, he reach the 64-player match play portion of the Championship. That allowed him to qualify and participate in the Senior British Amateur in 2025.
