Emily Wagner joined the Portland State tennis staff in January of 2012 as an assistant to head coach Jay Sterling. The Oregon native comes to the Vikings after spending the last two years as a tennis teaching professional at Cascade Athletic Club and a chiropractic assistant at Kirchem Chiropractic Associates.
“I’m thrilled that Emily has decided to join our program here at Portland State,” Sterling said. “As a player, she had a tremendously successful career at Colorado State University, and she gained valuable coaching experience as an assistant there as well. That experience, along with her ability to relate to our players, will provide a big boost to our continued goal to elevate this program to the top of our conference, and is just one more step that Portland State University has taken to further improve our Women’s tennis program. “
Wagner graduated from Colorado State University in December of 2007 with a B.S. in Health and Exercise Science. She was a four-year starter for the Rams at the number 1 and 2 positions and served as an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2008-09.
She was a four-time All-Mountain West Conference selection (2004-07) and was ranked as high as 85th in the country during the 2006 season in singles competition. She was ranked in the top 10 in the central region all four years and was named
conference Player of the Week four times during her career at Colorado State.
Wagner not only excelled on the court for the Rams but also in the classroom. She was a four-time MWC scholar athlete (2004-07). Along with conference academic honors, Wagner earned ITA Division I Scholar Athlete honors from 2004-07 for earning a 3.50 GPA or greater for the academic year.
