Michael Charles brings a wealth of experience to the Portland State Women's Golf coaching staff. Most recently, he was the men's and women's golf coach at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Charles served as the women's golf coach at the University of Portland in 2000-01.
Charles has also been a golf instructor at Eastmoreland Golf Club since 2007. He was a golf instructor at the John Jacobs/Roger Fredericks Golf Academy prior to that. Charles was the lead golf instructor for the Oregonian Women's Golf School at Meriwether Golf Club for a number of years.
Charles has vast competitive tournament experience to share with the Viking team, as well as experience in teaching fundamentals and a background in tournament preparation.
A 1996 graduate of Portland, Charles competed on the men's team, earning All-West Coast Conference honors and being a member of the 1993 WCC Championship team. He went on to compete on professional mini-tours for a number of years, reaching the Nationwide Tour level. Charles is the winner of five professional events.
Originally from Portland, Charles attended Jesuit High School where he was a three-time All-League player. Charles was a two-time Portland City Junior Champion, two-time Oregon Junior medalist and two-time Oregon Junior runner-up. Other credits include being selected to represent Oregon in the Hudson Cup and Junior Americas Cup; being a two-time qualifier for the USGA Public Links Championship; a runner-up at the Oregon Amateur Stroke Play Championship; a semifinalist at the Oregon Amateur Championship; a two-time quarterfinalist in the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championships; and tying for second at the 2008 Oregon PGA Chapter Championships.
