Peg Swadener

Peg Swadener is in her fourth season on the Portland State Women's Basketball coaching staff, and her third as the associate head coach. Swadener was promoted from assistant coach to her current position on April 18, 2008 by Head Coach Sherri Murrell.

A former basketball player at the University of Oregon, Swadener joined Murrell’s staff in July 2007 and her responsibilities include working with the posts, the offense and recruiting. She also oversees the academic success of the student-athletes on the team.

The 2010-11 season will bring about a new assignment for Swadener as she'll begin working with the Viking post players after overseeing the guards her first three seasons on the staff.

Under Swadener's coaching, point guard Claire Faucher produced three straight outstanding seasons. A three-time All-Big Sky first team selection, Faucher led the nation in assists per game in 2007-08 with an average of 8.8, finished sixth in the country the next season with an average of 6.7, and then was fourth nationally as a senior with an average of 6.7 per game. Faucher's 274 assists in 2007-08 where a Big Sky single-season record and she went on to earn honorable mention All-America status by the Associated Press.

In 2007-08, the Vikings’ offense was the most prolific since the program joined the Big Sky Conference prior to the 1996-97 season. Portland State led the Big Sky in scoring average (75.5 PPG), field goal percentage (44.1 Pct.) and assists per game (17.3). The Vikings also averaged 2.5 turnovers less per game in 2007-08 than in 2006-07.

In the past three years with Swadener overseeing the basketball players academic success, two Vikings have been named Academic All-Americans, and PSU players were named academic all-conference 18 times and academic all-district five times.

A native of Eugene, Ore., Swadener returned to the Northwest after spending the 2006-07 season as an assistant coach at Princeton University, where she primarily worked with the guards, in addition to having recruiting and scouting duties.

Swadener entered the coaching ranks as the head junior varsity and assistant varisty coach at Eugene’s Marist High School. She helped the Spartans to back-to-back Oregon Class 3A state titles in 1995-96 and 1996-97.

Swadener then joined the staff at Boise State in the summer of 1997, where she spent five seasons. With the Broncos, she assisted the offensive coordinator for four years, and also spent time developing both perimeter and post players. Swadener also worked as the team’s academic coordinator and saw the Bronco squad post a 3.4 cumulative GPA in the fall of 2001.

After five seasons at Boise State, Swadener was an assistant at Idaho State during the 2002-03 season, working with the guards and serving as recruiting coordinator.

Following the 2002-03 season, Swadener returned to her alma mater and spent three years an assistant for the Ducks from 2003-2006. During her time at Oregon, she served as the recruiting coordinator and helped coach Oregon to a 22-10 record and a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004-05.

As a player at Oregon, Swadener was a three-time Academic All-Pacific 10 Conference selection.

She graduated from Oregon in June, 1994 with a B.S. in Exercise and Movement Science. Swadener is currently workng on her Master’s in Exercise and Sport Science at Boise State.
