The 2010-11 season will be Mike Hood's fourth as an assistant coach on the Portland State women’s basketball staff. Hood was hired in April 2007 by former Head Coach Charity Elliott, and retained by present Head Coach Sherri Murrell.
Hood will make the switch to working the Viking guards this year after overseeing the post players his first three seasons on the staff. Hood saw his post players earn four all-conference honors over that time and one player earn the conference's top freshman award.
During the 2008-09 year, senior forward Kelsey Kahle was named a unanimous first team All-Big Sky player and the conference's defensive player of the year, while sophomore forward Kelli Valentine was named honorable mention All-BSC.
Kahle and Valentine ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the Big Sky in field goal percentage, while also ranking 10th and 16th in rebounding. Kahle finished second in the Big Sky scoring race, averaging 16.5 ppg, and Valentine came in 16th, averaging 11.4 ppg.
In 2007-08 Kahle was an honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference pick after leading PSU in scoring and rebounding while also leading the Big Sky in field goal percentage. Additionally, senior forward Delaney Conway was named to the second team, while Valentine was tabbed as the Big Sky's Outstanding Freshman.
In addition to his on-court coaching duties, Hood also is in charge of film exchange and player conditioning.
Prior to becoming a women’s assistant, Hood spent two years working within the Athletics Department at Portland State. During the 2005-06 athletic year, Hood was a graduate assistant within the department, working mainly in administration. His duties included working as a liason between the department and the campus housing and dining programs.
Hood also served as a volunteer assistant basketball coach for the Portland State men’s program during the 2005-06 year. He coordinated video and computer operations while assisting with on-court coaching and the scout team.
During the 2006-07 season, he was the Director of Basketball Operations for the Viking men. In that capacity, he coordinated and assisted with film exchange and recruiting operations.
Hood graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Social Behavior in 2004 from UC Irvine. He was a three-year letterwinner for the Anteaters from 2001-03, helping the team to a pair of Big West regular season titles and appearances in the 2001 and 2002 NIT Tournaments. As a senior, Hood was named All-Big West honorable mention, and was selected to the All-Big West Tournament team.
Prior to attending UC Irvine, Hood spent two years at the College of Southern Idaho, lettering in basketball during the 1999-2000 season. The College of Southern Idaho captured the SWAC Region 18 championship and advanced to the Junior College National Tournament that season. Hood was also named the 2000 President’s Male Athlete of the Year at the College of Southern Idaho.
Hood was born July 25, 1980 in Portland. He completed his Master’s in Health Studies at PSU in 2007, and was married to former Viking women’s basketball player Heidi Stuart on September 8, 2007. Their daughter, Jordyn Malia, was born on April 6, 2009.
