Kahil Fennell became the final addition to Coach Barret Peery’s basketball staff at Portland State when he joined the Vikings in early June.
“Kahil is a great choice for us,” Peery said. “He checks all the boxes in what I am looking for and will be another great piece to our staff as a coach, a recruiter and a representative of our program,“ said Peery.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to work with Coach Peery in his first season at Portland State. I have great confidence in what he will do with this program. With the coming of the Viking Pavilion, this great city, Portland State has a chance to rise to the top of the Big Sky Conference,” said Fennell.
Fennell had spent the past two seasons coaching at Texas-Permian Basin, a Division II program. He was assistant coach in 2015-16, then elevated to Associate Head Coach in 2016-17. The Falcons were conference regular season and tournament champions this past year, setting a school record with 26 wins. UTPB led the nation in rebounding and ranked 12th in scoring.
Fennell had worked previously as a junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Alameda (CA) High School.
A native of the state of California, Fennell attended Thousand Oaks High School where he was an All-League performer and team captain. Fennell played one season of junior college basketball at Penn State New Kensington where he earned Academic All-State honors. He then spent three seasons playing wing at the University of the Redlands, where he was also team captain.
Fennell earned a degree in History from Redlands in 2004. He spent 10 years working in the medical device industry before transitioning into coaching. Fennell and his wife Sarah have two sons, Ezra (3) and Koa (2).
