CJ Killin begins his second season with the Portland State basketball coaching staff. Killin worked previously as an assistant at Idaho State.
“I am very excited to have CJ join our basketball family’” said Peery. “I have known him for many years. He has worked for several programs I am close to, so I am very comfortable having him join us.”
“I coached against Coach Peery’s teams when he was at Indian Hills,” Killin said. “I have always respected what he has done in the junior college ranks and now what he has done at Portland State. I am excited to learn from him here as we grow this program.”
Killin is a native of Central City, Nebraska. A graduate of Nebraska-Kearney, Killin began work there as an undergraduate assistant, then spent one season coaching in the Grand Island (NE) Central Catholic high school program while also teaching at the school.
He has significant experience coaching at the junior college level, working at Central (NE) Community College, Peru State (NE) College, New Mexico Junior College and Odessa (TX) College. Last season, he was an assistant for Bill Evans at Idaho State.
At Odessa College, Killin helped coach the team to a 28-5 record and a Western Junior College Athletic Conference title. Killin coached the WJCAC Player of the Year L.J. Figueroa and assisted in recruiting and coaching four All-WJCAC players that year.
In all, as an assistant at four junior colleges, Killin helped place 20 student-athletes in Division I programs.
“CJ has an excellent mind for the game and is a relentless recruiter,” said Peery. “CJ is very respected in the basketball world and has great relationships and ties that will help him be very successful in our program. He knows me very well and understands how we do things, therefore his transition to our program will be very smooth.”
Killin has a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska-Kearney and earned a master’s degree from Wayne State.
