Terry Davis was named Director of Player Personnel/Recruiting Specialist for the program for the 2022 season. His efforts in recruiting for the 2023 cycle paid immediate dividends. According to 247Sports.com, Portland State had the number-one national letter of intent signing class in the Big Sky Conference and number-three class in the nation.
In the off-season Davis was named Recruiting Coordinator for the program.
“Terry played a vital role in signing a class that was nationally-ranked,” said Barnum. “His transition to our program over the past year has been even bigger and better than I could have expected.”
Davis comes to Portland State with a lengthy resume in athletics. He worked as a recruiting coordinator at Washington State the past three seasons, and at New Mexico State for three seasons prior to that, while also coaching. While at WSU, Davis helped the program secure nationally-ranked recruiting classes in 2021 and 2022, including the best junior college recruiting class in the country according to JBB Baseball. On the field, the Cougars posted their best record since 2015, while also setting a program record for team GPA (3.09).
Davis was part of a historic three-year stretch (2017-19) for the Aggies who collected 109 wins during that span and signed three straight nationally-recognized recruiting classes including the final two with Davis as the lead recruiter. Included in that group was 2020 Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year Nick Gonzalez, who was drafted seventh overall.
The Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference in 2018, winning 40 total games, then the 2019 title winning 38 games, and went to the NCAA post-season each year. Off the field, Davis and the program earned the NMSU Athletics Community Service Award for the fourth straight year in 2019 and set the program attendance record for the fourth time since 2015.
Prior to NMSU, Davis was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Bellarmine University (2014-16) in Kentucky where he helped the Knights to a pair of Great Lakes Valley Tournament berths. Davis also coached 10 seasons at St. Catharine College (2004-13) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
In the summers, Davis was an active camp director at the University of Kentucky and for Prep Baseball Report Kentucky. Davis also served as a group leader for Demarini/Top 96 Showcases throughout the United States. In 2009, he served as the head coach of the Fulton Railroaders, and led the team to a third place finish in the KIT League.
As a player, Davis helped Spalding University to the 2002 NAIA World Series and the program’s first ever 50-win season. Davis then earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Catharine College in sports leadership.
