Mike Scheper is entering his third season at Portland State coaching the defensive line.
Scheper’s work with the defensive end position has made it one of the deeper groups on the team. In 2013, Jeremy Boone earned honorable mention All-Big Sky honors. Scheper also got good production from Nick Alexander, Brandon Tobias, Bryant Long, Dame Ndiaye and Sadat Sulleyman making the ends position one of the deeper groups on the team.
Scheper has a variety of experience ranging from high school to junior college to Division I and to the Canadian Football League.
“Mike has done everything from Division I at Fresno to the CFL, junior college and high school,” said Viking Coach Nigel Burton. “He has coached offensive and defensive line. His ability to know offensive protections and run-game rules, the little things, make him a valuable coach. And the things he was able to do at a high level in the CFL; they had one of the best seasons for defensive line play in the history of the Saskatchewan organization.”
Both of Scheper’s defensive ends, Stevie Baggs and John Chick, earned CFL All-Star honors in 2009, leading the league in quarterback sacks with 12 and 11, respectively. Chick was the CFL Defensive Player of the Year that season and moved on to the NFL. Baggs and Jerrell Freeman, another CFL All-Star whom Scheper worked with, moved on to the NFL after their time with the Riders. Saskatchewan also won its Division title for the first time in 33 years and appeared in two Grey Cup Championship games during Scheper’s tenure with the club.
Scheper most recently coached at College of the Canyons in 2011 where current Vikings Jeremy Boone and Jake Woolley, as well as former Viking, Khalil Bass, played. Other coaching credits include Fresno State, Glendale Community College and St. Francis (CA) High School.
A native of Southern California, Scheper is a 2002 graduate of Utah State where he played center (at over 300 pounds) for the Aggies. Scheper earned a scholarship after originally walking on with the Aggies.
