Ikaika Malloe (ee-KEYE-ka ma-LOY) is in his third season as Portland State’s Defensive Tackles Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Malloe has had great success in both areas he has coached at PSU.
Malloe’s group of tackles played a big role in limiting opponent rushing offenses in 2012. PSU held five Big Sky schools to 86 yards or less in rushing, including 0 rushing yards by national semifinalist Eastern Washington. Senior Dereck Jester earned honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference.
On special teams, the Vikings suffered from an injury to All-American Zach Brown, who missed half of the season. But, Malloe brought in a solid performer in kicker Nick Fernandez. Punter Thomas Duyndam also had a solid season, coming close to the PSU punting average record. Brown and kick returner Nevin Lewis also earned honorable mention All-Big Sky.
In 2013, the Vikings held seven teams under 100 yards rushing, had 91 tackles for loss and 27 sacks. Joe Lopez and Junior Alexis both were named honorable mention All-Big Sky as defensive tackles.
The special teams featured the nation’s top punter in All-American Kyle Loomis and the Vikings led the nation in net punting as well. The Vikings also blocked seven kicks and punts, and held opponents to a Big Sky Conference low 14.9 yards per kick return. In addition, kick returner Nate Tago and special teamer Hayden Plinke earned honorable mention All-Big Sky.
Lopez and Alexis return to an experienced tackle position, as Savali Talalemotu and Vincent Johnson lend depth. Loomis, Tago and Plinke also return to lead the special teams.
“Ikaika has experience as a special teams coordinator at the WAC level at Hawai’i, and at Western Ilinois,” said Viking Coach Nigel Burton. “And, his playing experience as one of the best special teams players in University of Washington history just adds to that.”
