Dave Brown played an integral role in the revitalized and Big Sky Conference-best running game at Portland State in 2010. As Run Game Coordinator of the Pistol Offense, he brought vast knowledge of the system from his time at Nevada where it was developed.

Brown begins his second year at PSU where he also serves as the Vikings’ running backs coach. Brown coached wide receivers in 2010.

Brown has the good fortune of working with one of the Big Sky Conference’s most talented players in Cory McCaffrey. The senior running back is the top returning rusher in the league (1,287 yards). Incorporating senior Willie Griffin and getting the younger backs ready for when those two graduate with by essential this year.

Prior to coming to Portland State, Brown spent four seasons at the University of Nevada, working with the Wolfpack offense. He worked with Nevada’s “Pistol” offense since its inception at that school. In 2009, the Pistol ranked number one in rushing (344.9), number two in total offense (505.6) and number six in scoring (38.2) at the FBS level.

“Dave’s expertise is the Pistol,” said Burton. “He was so well trusted by (Nevada) Coach (Chris) Ault, that he coached the quarterbacks last season. He brings immense knowledge of the Pistol, working with it from day one at Nevada. Better yet, he’s a great person and really knows how to mentor kids.”

In 2008, Nevada’s Pistol ranked fifth in the nation in total offense (510.6), second in rushing (291.4) and 12th in scoring (37.8).

Prior to working at Nevada, Brown spent five seasons coaching at Central Missouri State. While the running backs coach there, Brown coached the top two runners in school history. They set 14 school records and earned two All-American honors. Central Missouri State went 43-13 during those five seasons, earning a conference title, a national playoff appearance and a bowl victory.

Brown was a quarterback in college, winning a national championship at Butler Community College in 1999, and playing at Central Missouri State in 2000.

Brown is a native of Kansas City. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and master’s degree in Sports Business Administration from Central Missouri.
